Hi I am considering attending UC Berkley and have heard really great things about their anthropology program ( my major). Can anyone give me any information on that? I really want to be able to attend a top tier grad program (the dream is Oxford), and I think I am capable of maintaining the GPA but can Cal get me to those schools?
Hmmm, are you a junior in HS, about to apply to college?
Short answer, no Cal can’t get you into Oxford- you have to get you into Oxford ![]()
More useful answer: for Oxford (or other UK schools), any good school will do, if you have a strong GPA (min 3.6/4.0) (no GMAT or GRE even). Here’s one way of checking out the US rankings (UCB does very well): http://chronicle.com/article/NRC-Rankings-Overview-/124703/
What will matter much, much more for getting into Oxford than the name of the school is what you do during your degree, b/c what will matter most is the 2-3 page “Statement of Purpose / Personal Statement” that you will submit with your application. This is where you outline “your reasons for applying, expectations of the degree, prior academic background and interests” (from the Oxford website). This is an academic essay, not an “I’ve always loved exploring old things” essay. You reference substantive reading that you have done (beyond your curriculum); the things that you have done that have developed your original interest into something in which you have some expertise (summer work is usually useful with this part), and how these things (plus your school work and any other relevant experiences) have combined into knowing what area you want to research / study further. Note that part of deciding who gets in is whether the department has the ability “to provide the appropriate supervision, research opportunities, teaching and facilities for your chosen area of work”.
In other words: it will be about matching who you are as a potential researcher- when you are applying- with what they are researching.
Heads up, though: the US approaches grad school very differently.
