Any 3 Subject Tests: Math a must? Parents help

Almost all universities and colleges say that they require the SAT and any 2 Subject Tests. In the case of Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Georgetown, it is any 3 subject tests.

My son who is not a Math fan despite the fact that he is in honors pre calc (with an A- /B+ average) is thinking of substituting Math 2C with Spanish Subject Test.

He will be taking either all 3 subject tests in June (Chemistry, US History and Math2C/Spanish) unless he does very well in his April SAT1 in which case he will be sitting for the USHistory Subject test in May, the day after the AP USHistory.

Does any parent or member know if omitting a Math Subject test detrimental to a college application?

Omitting Math would only be a problem if the student plans to major in math or a physical science. Otherwise, he should take the 3 subjects at which he will have the highest scores as determined by practice tests. It is usually best to take the subject test shortly after the end of the class which is being tested. I.e., if he takes chemistry this year, he should consider the chemistry subject test this June.

Best of luck!

You have to read the fine print about testing at every university to which you are applying. Some are open (any three-like Harvard); some may require specific tests (I think MIT requires 2–one science, one math). The UCs won’t accept the Math 1C–if you are going to do a math one, it has got to be 2C. So you really have to check carefully.

Colleges that require II’s usually require math for science, math and engineering programs. Otherwise, most allow you to send what you choose and not having math is not a negative. However, there are some colleges that “highly recommend” that math be one of your SAT II’s (regardless of major) and thus it can make a difference at those; ones I am aware of: Stanford, Wellesley, Davidson. There are also colleges that use the math II not for admission but for placement; example: UNC does not require II’s for admission but if admitted you must have the Math II for placement.

Thank you for all your replies. So the best thing to do I guess is to check the individual colleges and their requirements when it comes to Subject Tests. Son is interested in Humanities (Political Science and History) and will not be applying to Engineering Schools.

I assume your son is a junior. I would suggest that he take the math test (2C) and the other tests. It gives him more options and he can take the Spanish in the fall. The listening part of the language tests is only offered in the November sitting. (Often colleges require the listening test for language placement.)
