I know the numbers for my 2013 taxes and I have completed the FAFSA, including listing my daughter’s schools in alphabetical order. Should we file it now or wait until 1/31 when IRS will accept e-filing?

File it now. Then go back in and update when you can use the DRT from the IRS website.

^ yep. Earlier the better to get it in, you’d have to come back to do the e-file link thing later anyway.

The majority of federal aid comes in the form of direct loans and Pell grants- neither of which are first-come, first-serve.
The site that it links to, its “source”, makes no sense.

From that same site, THIS is flat-out wrong:

This is why we don’t use wikipedia for sources ;)

Yes, Romani. But many Pell eligible kids also would like some of the limited funding need based aid as well…like work study, a Perkins loan, or SEOG if their school has it. Those DO have limited funding per college campus.

I personally think that filing earlier is smart.

Agreed about the dates for 2014-2015 FAFSA. I believe it is able to be filed any time between January 1, 2014 and June 2015. There are students who will file in June 2015 to get the Direct Loan, or realize late that they are entitled to the Pell.

IN addition, if a student is eligible for any kind of Opportunity program (in NY; Seek, College Discovery, EOP, HEOP, which does meet full need for students accepted in these programs), those slots are available on a first come first serviced basis. A student cannot go to the next step for financial eligibility until the FAFSA is filed.

I was told by colleges over and over to file FAFSA asap for the best possible aid. S’ package included some non-Pell non-Stafford state and federal aid - and institutional aid for that matter (it was a FAFSA only school so they allocated their own resources first-come first-served too).
