Any advice for my situation

I was admitted into UCLA for the upcoming fall term, but in my winter quarter I got 1 D and 4 A’s and was rescinded. I never got around to signing another SIR so I’m not sure exactly what it is I’m going to do in the upcoming year. So far, I’ve already signed up to work for Habitat for Humanity in Katmandu, Nepal and I figure that is a relatively good usage of my time but otherwise I don’t really know about my school situation. Is it realistic to apply to schools again without doing any actual school work in the 08-09 year. I don’t really have much left to do at my community college. Should I continue jobby job work and some ngo type of work in the meantime and hope someone will accept me? Will anyone realistically look at me now as a real potential student they would like to admit or am I just damaged goods?

my friend got her offer rescinded from UCLA and she contacted CSUN, they will take her for Fall 2008.

as far as Habitat goes, that is AWESOME!!! i totally wanted to go to Nepal, but I just came back from Ghana and my parents weren’t too hot on the political movements and the Polio outbreak. that’s all settled by now, but i guess i understand their concern.

my suggestion is that you go to community college, boost your GPA and re-apply. never settle for less. go to nepal and come back a renewed individual. your PS prompt will be totally awesome after habitat and an added year at CC.

opportunity, that’s what this all is.

It seems as if my gpa is going to stay around a 3.5, I would totally be open to boost it but I’d have to take a huge sum of classes to get it higher and I’m already above 90 units so? will additional classes actually be considered? And, yeah, man, I really appreciate your optimism. I was considering doing a program like this following me getting a bachelors but as my situation is how it is I thought **** it, now is as good a time as ever. One of the reasons Nepal seemed cool though was because of all the naughty political happenings going on over there. Did you help build houses in Ghana or was there a bunch more that you did?

you “never got around to signing another SIR”… ***? do you mean the other schools you got accepted to were not schools you had any desire to attend? cuz otherwise that just sounds dumb.

why not retake that D class and reapply to UCLA in November?

Just be careful of the local political activist. If there is noise of Maoist guerrilla terrorist around, don’t start spreading around that you’re an American.

I was a teacher at an orphanage. I taught around 30 kids, half from the orphanage and half from the local village. It was an amazing experience.

But I also did habitat for humanity in Hawaii (takes away from the awesomeness, i know). I absolutely loved it and can not wait to go again! =)

but also, like someone previously mentioned, you can re-take your D grade and get a passing grade (an A!) and your GPA will rocket back up. done and done.

lol itchy, I stopped reading after that

I didn’t realize the deadline was on June 1st and at first was unsure if the contract was binding so my plan was to wait for an appeal before signing but ya dumb for sure on my part. But, I’m comfortable with it as long as I won’t be penalized for all this in the future and I can do other things that I wanted to in the mean time. Do you have any advice though Mr. Leper? I’ve never actually worked with Habitat before. And, ya I registered for the class in the summer. I made sure to choose a teacher with a good reputation. In the winter I took a teacher a lot of people warned me about, I figured I would be fine as long as I show up and study but ya whatever.

^ well gl with whatever route you choose and i think its MS. Leper ;)

lol, thanks itchy.

A lot of stuff, but simple. I’m sure you know a lot of this already! But if you have never been to a 3rd world country, I suggest you prepare yourself for a big surprise. Don’t let it get to you, keep interested and curious.

some simple stuff, bring your own work gloves, heavy duty sunblock (with bug repellent, if possible), durable shoes that are water-proof (for lots of sight seeing and hiking!), bandanna (ALWAYS useful) and don’t carry any weapons around! If you use the internet cafes (there will be plenty, I’m sure) make SURE you log out of any webpages you logged into! The webpages take forever to load, so always get more time than you think you need.

i’m sure little kids will come up to you, asking you for money and whatnot. as much as it breaks the heart, you can’t give them any. they know they can play you and hope to get some out of it, but you just gotta hold on and look apologetic and say “I don’t have any.” It’s gonna be tough and you’ll feel heartless for awhile, but if you hand out some, you WILL be mobbed.

Don’t eat food off the streets and carry a bottle of water with you wherever you go, a liter or more (if possible). No matter HOW amazing that meat on a stick or that bowl of soup looks, keep in mind that traveler’s diarrhea can easily strike. It will probably be safe eating with the habitat crew, typically the build leader will have every restaurant picked out before you get there.

Find out about the laundry situation. If you’re doing it by hand and drying them out in the air, you may want to invest in a quick dry towel from REI. I know Nepal (mainly the capital) is a populated country, but Habitat is notorious for having the cheapest housing available, safe but cheap.

Read up on the local customs. I made the mistake of not shaking hands with every person I met in Ghana. Not only shaking of hands, but some finger snap I have to do at the end which I FINALLY mastered after 3 weeks, lol.

whew, that’s a lot! lol.

xleper how do do you find all this time for greatness?

lol, i’ve got a lot of free time on my hands. =P jk, haha.
