Hi there-son was asked by Division 3 coach to submit his ED1 Common App as soon as possible. Is this just for him so he knows he’s got my son as a recruit, or is it to have Admissions give him the OK earlier? Thank you.
Probably both, but you can ask for a pre-read from admissions/financial aid prior to submitting the application so you know what you’re getting into (if he is highly recruited athlete).

I believe my son did have a pre-read…gave the coach his courses for senior year, sent his grades for high school and sent coach is SAT and ACT scores. After that, he called my son and asked him to send his Common App ASAP. He told us he was his top recruit for next year. Thoughts?
Your son should wait until school starts and try to do an OV. This way he can determine if the team is a good fit for him. Did your son get a positive response from admissions? Generally you are not going to get an official response until the ED date, usually in mid December. So, sending really early makes no difference, just need to be in before deadline. Traditionally, verbal to your coach that you will submit ED is usually good enough
Thank you. He did a camp with the coach and team over the summer and was invited to an overnight in the fall with the team. My son did verbally commit to the coach this summer and the coach was very happy and has been staying in touch. I am just wondering about why it might be better to submit now vs. September?
If he truly is the top recruit what’s the advantage to your family? Sounds like the advantage is to the coach to lock him in.
If he gets your son in and accepted now, he can go focus on closing out his recruiting cycle with other players.
thank you that makes sense.
One benefit to you is to have it over. When my daughter was deciding, I asked the coach if there was any benefit to signing the NLI I Nov rather than April. She hemmed and hawed, but finally admitted there wasn’t any financial benefit, but just timing. I have to say it was great to have it over with earlier. My daughter enjoyed the relief, talking to the other kids who had also committed, being able to tell other schools she was committed.
Where is this located? link?
If your son is 100% sure it is the right college, why not get it over with? You will not get formal admission notice until mid-December, but the coach can informally confirm with admission that all looks ok. My son did only sent in one application, which saved him (and me) a lot of time:)
My son admitted is application this week and emailed the coach. My son got a great response that the coach would go find it at admissions. Both have been texted one another-my son asked me if he should text the coach and ask if he’s in (or maybe you can advise a better question)?
If the school has rolling admissions, your son might hear early. On the other hand many D3 schools are very sensitive about who conveys the official decision – it must come from admissions and not the coach. It just depends on the school.
@bayfront2 Did the coach say that your son received a positive pre-read from admissions? If so, depending on the school, your son may receive a likely letter from admissions before official results are released.
My son recently submitted his ED application to a NESCAC school, and this conference does not issue Likely Letters. He received a positive pre-read, but he won’t receive anything more official until the results are released to all of the ED applicants in December.
On the flip side, is there any DISadvantage to waiting until November to apply EDI (assuming the school does NOT have rolling admissions)?
DD has verbally committed to a NESCAC with the understanding she has coach’s support. I’m wondering if it is better to hold off on pushing that ED submit button in case something “horrible” happens with her first choice school between now and November? Waiting may give DD time to regroup if necessary and pursue another option (eg. EDI at a “close second choice” school).
