Any chance at Dartmouth/Williams?

Hi! I’m currently a freshman at a liberal-arts college, looking to transfer to Dartmouth or Williams.

I was in my junior year of high school when I considered transferring colleges. My living/family situation had taken a toll on my academic life (since middle school) and I knew my dream of attending Dartmouth or Williams was out of reach. I had around a 3.6 UW GPA upon graduating high school, and currently hold a 3.9 GPA at college.

I have searched for past transfer applicants to Dartmouth on this forum and came across two accepted transfers: a man who was awarded a Purple Heart for fighting in Iraq, and a girl who had suffered sexual molestation and homelessness. Are these the only types of transfer applicants accepted?

Oops… I don’t attend a liberal-arts college - I would like to. I attend the University of Connecticut (I’m an in-state student).

You’ll want to be more detailed in your description of your credentials.

Dartmouth accepted 25/673 or roughly 3.7% of its applicants last fall. (Source:[College Search - Dartmouth College - Admission](<a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>College Search - BigFuture | College Board)) So, yes, only applicants outstanding in some way get admitted. I would imagine Williams is the same.

G’luck. :)

Thank you for your reply. Eeek @ 3.7%…anyway, what kind of credentials should I post? (high school or current)?

They’ll consider both, so if you want your chances assessed by CC users you can do that. But I was referring to things that somehow make you “outstanding” - a hook, so to speak. There are a lot of 4.0s and 2400s out there, but when colleges can only admit a select few, they’ll be looking at who you are.

High School:
Started an after-school environmental education program for kids, to promote a deeper connection to nature
Won the ESU National Shakespeare Competition in my junior year
Performed in about 16 various musicals/plays/concerts (6 lead roles)

Won national photography awards (focus on film photography)
Won national poetry awards
Volunteer at a local art museum
Editor of the Music and Fashion Sections of school art magazine
Co-Editor-in-Chief of school literary magazine
Found my own unpaid internships (summer after 9th grade: television production company, summer after 10th grade: local recycling department)

If you want to transfer into a “less selective” elite school, UNC, Michigan, Emory, and UVA are all on the easier side for transfers. Among the top 15, WashU, Rice, Northwestern, and Chicago are less selective for transfers then first years. Dartmouth and Williams are really tough, they will also want high SAT scores.
