Just of note: I am taking part in a virtual stock exchange game with 100s of students around Hong Kong and am currently in the top 3. Even if I come in the top 20 I will win a award for representing my school, and if I come in the top 5 I will win an individual award. Furthermore, I will be doing a similar kind of competition, but in school only, and will most probably win that. How will these affect my chances?

Average SAT scores for an international Asian applicant. You’re competing with the same pool as internationals, and Stanford is NOT need blind to internationals (I’m not sure if you’re applying for aid, though). Good UW GPA, however.

Good, will probably help you.

Interesting, but adcoms may believe you’re padding your resume. Most applicants to top schools tend to commit to an activity at least three years.

Will raise a red flag. Be sure to evaluate your hours carefully and be sure not to include time you’ve spent sleeping and eating. I noticed you’ve:

which is the activity which you’ve likely included sleeping into your community service hours. By the way, you know Chinese? Impressive; you might want to mention that somewhere on your application (if you say that you’re Indian).

Awards received while you were in 8th grade or lower are not considered. School awards are negligible. I’d say the only awards worth mentioning are:

because frankly the others are not particularly impressive to a HYPSM adcom. Then again, I’m going on a limb and assuming that the “Elucid Scholarship” is important (unfamiliar with international competitions). The primary reason I’m not too sure if you should emphasize your math ability is due to your low math SAT Reasoning score.

By the way, how many chance threads have you made thus far?

Those 700 hours do not include sleeping or anything else. They are truly 700 hours of community service. I always made one silly mistake on the SAT reasoning math section but I made up for it with a 800 in the Math II and many international math awards, which, I feel, may not be of the calibre of AIME but are respected nonetheless.

this thread is a laundry list of awards. top schools care little about the list and immensely about how your activities impacted you as a person and your community.

in my opinion, in regard to the last question, no i dont think that stock market game will impact your decision unless it randomly becomes a significant experience that changed your life.

in response to “Teacher screwed up in 11 or I would have got gold again”, stanford or any other school doesnt care about the excuse.

im assuming 44/45 is your predicted? congrats! that’s great.

in response to the 2nd post, it’s not really that impressive to know chinese if you are living in hong kong. it would be almost expected.

overall, i would say find some focus.
if someone read this, i would assume they would think that the list is unattractive. it has lots of info and awards but it doesnt really have any value. what matters is knowing wat to include and wat to EXCLUDE. be selective about what you send them in the fall.

also, random other note, major holds no influence on your admissions decision.

I’d also like to add that your ECs are ridiculously Asian, so they might ding you for that as they’re trying to assemble a diverse student body. Don’t get me wrong - I’m not saying being really Asian is bad. All I’m saying is that they already have their pics of tippy-top math/science students (think IMO, USAMO, Intel/Siemens, Westinghouse, etc) to choose from - so what sets you apart from them?

I can see you are from Hong Kong. Has your school send in students earlier to Stanford? Why are you not applying early?
Also check for data as to how many people get into Stanford every year from Hong Kong?
