Any computer whizs here?: Computer battery not charging

Hello all. I have an HP laptop, not even a year old yet. The battery will no longer charge, even though I have the charger hooked into the computer and surge protector. Does this mean it is likely that the battery is no longer good and needs replacing? Is it odd for this to happen before the 1 year warranty on the computer has even expired?

Yes. That is the likely scenario. Computer batteries suck. Call HP and yell (respectfully, of course) about it.

It could be the battery or the charging circuitry in the laptop.

My experience with Lithium Ion batteries is that they should last at least five years.

Many batteries have self-testers in them where you push something on the battery and it lights up to show the battery status. You could give that a try if your battery supports that. Did you buy this at a place that does service and are you still under warranty? I would just bring it back in this case.

If you’re only entitled to phone support, then you’ll have to go through that most likely unpleasant experience.

That’s what I like about Apple - you just bring it to the Apple Store.

Dell had a well known problem with battery charge cords a few years ago…the charge cord itself would malfunction but the only symptom for us were batteries that refused to charge. My S had a friend who had the same computer/charge cord combo. S was able to charge his laptop battery using the friend’s cord but not with his own. His friend’s cord eventually went bad too.
