There’s a lot of good channels with high quality, entertaining stuff, it’s not like it’s Jersey Shore or nothing. Not that there’s anything wrong with having a dirty secret or two. ;)

And I find Comcast’s OnDemand service for movies to provide a much higher quality picture than streaming through my Roku.

I hAve no disdain for what’s on cable; we don’t even watch much of the good stuff on PBS. We just aren’t big TV watchers. After dinner we walk the dog, maybe play a game, then read or work.

I agree with this. I cancelled HBO and would certainly have cancelled MTV when my kids were at the age where it was hard to monitor what they were watching. Haven’t made a list, but there are probably at least two dozen cable channels that I would block at the street if I were able to do it. Someday we’ll probably be able to do it.

My D lectures me for spending time in front of a screen * without * cable. I don’t dare risk the level of hell she would raise with cable.
Besides then we would have to get a television.
;)

I had a cable tuner card in my PC for a while, I could watch TV in a window that I could resize as big or small as I wanted, while doing other stuff on the computer.

“The problem with Cable TV is that you can’t order channels a la carte.”

Bingo!

"Most recent tvs let you block channels.

If you could get channels a la carte, they wouldn’t be $1/month. After a few channels you’d be spending more than getting the package."

Even if I block all sports channels and Jersey Shore crap, I still have to pay $82/month so Mr B could watch CNN and CNBC in the morning. I would gladly pay $10 per each of the two and still come out ahead.

Sure, if you seriously only ever watch one or two channels, it might make sense.

The cheapest Comcast package besides limited basic (which is only local stations) is $30/month and has 45 channels. So if you watch more than 3 channels at $10 it is cheaper to just get a package.

I can go to Hulu, ABC, NBC, CBS, CW and watch the shows that I want to when I want to for free. No need to pay $1/month for any of them. Hulu also has old shows, again, gratis. I’m sure that there’s stuff that I miss that I might be interested in but that’s fine with me.

What makes me crazy about cable is all the commercials!

So the other night, I decided to try watching cable while my husband ran a quick errand. Oh my! I’ve not watched so many commercials since I don’t know when. I was irked when Hulu started showing commercials, but even they don’t show that many in comparison to cable. And then there were all the channels I had to click through that I don’t even want to watch (Spanish TV anyone?). I tried to figure out how to delete those channels, but my college degree wasn’t enough of an education for me to be able to figure that out. Sigh.

The only cable channel we really want is the one that shows NJDevils hockey. However we can’t just ‘buy’ that one - it only comes with some premium package and there is no way that it is worth that much to us. If cable let us order a la carte, then we certainly would. Since they do not, it’s their financial loss.

When we had cable, one of the draws was no commercials.
Obviously that’s been some time ago.

Although I’m sure if we had cable we would find something to watch, h & I have different viewing patterns. He likes to have something on as background noise, has the radio on constantly in the garage, turns the radio on when he comes into the kitchen… But with my poor sensory filter that drives me absolutely bonkers, & if it was the television that would be worse.

It had been so long since I last watched cable TV that I didn’t know that it had commercials now. That came as a huge surprise to me. A huge bummer actually.

We only just got cable a few years ago. We chose not to have it during the growing up years. Dh enjoys watching TV in the evenings. I keep him company while on my laptop or I read.

The Comcast people are sure puzzled.
I am often working outside in my yard when they are installing a new hook-up and they come over to chat at me to see what services we want.
I don’t have a landline and we use Clear for internet.
The only wire to our house is for electricity.
Its much less stressful not having the television on so much.
