Any dentists here? Root canal pain

Ouch, ouch, ouch - I just had a root canal done on an upper incisor less than an hour ago. The anesthetic has yet to wear off, and it already hurts! The dentist performed part one of the root canal today - removing the damaged dental pulp. Part two, filling with gutta percha, will be done on Sunday.

I’m making this post because the tooth is hurting like… like a hurting thing, and I’d like tips on whether this is normal/how to deal with it. The dentist did say a root canal on the front teeth would hurt, but I’ve had a root canal done on a molar and that one didn’t hurt a fraction as much. I’ve taken extra strong painkillers but they’re taking some time to kick in.

Anyone? Do root canals on incisors hurt more than on molars, is this pain normal, and how do I work through the pain? My pain tolerance is pretty high, so I’m a little alarmed that I’m feeling this one so badly.*

Sounds terrible. Can’t help, but I’ll give you a bump in case a dentist here will see the thread. Also, call your own dentist as soon as the office opens.

Not a dentist but I’ve had a bunch of root canals. I found that the ones that hurt a lot after the first procedure were in teeth with very long roots, such as incisors and canines, and the dentist failed to remove all the nerve. The pain in those cases is terrible. I had to go back a day to two later for emergency retreatment to remove the rest of the nerve.

^^yikes…that sounds horrible.

Good news - the pain subsided about two hours after the dentist visit, and it no longer hurts as sharply as it did before and just after the operation. I’m pretty sure the dentist did a good job removing the damaged nerve, and she did warn me beforehand that there might be pain and swelling in the upper lip/nose area. I just didn’t expect it to be that intense.

Bizarrely, I was looking forward to this root canal operation. The tooth has a problematic history (I broke it in a fall 13 years ago and it’s been patched up with filling twice since, once earlier this year when my tooth went to war with a nougat bar and lost) so when it started hurting three days ago, I figured it was a good time to finally get a root canal operation and a crown on that tooth before going away to college.

Here’s to it not hurting again…

Might i reccomend some moltren and a heat pack?

Just saw this, hopefully the OP is doing well by now. Thought I’d better chime in. Never a heat pack after root canal, it can make things worse. Ice can sometimes be helpful.

Most pain is when the numbness first wears off. It is best to take an OTC or prescription analgesic before that happens and again at bedtime if it’s still sore.
