Any Drexel Questions/Prospective/Accepted Students

Hey guys. I know Zack already posted some stuff about dorms but I figured that as a recently accepted student I would give a review of the dorms from the opinion of a girl. I visited today and yesterday during the Accepted Student’s Day and they had 4 dorms open: Millenium, Kelly, Towers, and Myers.

Millenium (Honors dorm): This dorm is the newest and most expensive dorm because it’s honors housing for next year. I HATED THIS DORM lol. First off, I’m a little bit scared of heights and pretty scared of elevators. This building is curved very funny and everything inside felt weird and off center. The hallways were extremely curved and it felt claustrophobic, not too mention it’d be hard to meet people because there really is no “hall life”. Bathrooms were individual which was nice, but again that makes it harder to meet people. There was a lot of concrete on the ceilings and walls that wasn’t painted or anything. I think it was supposed to look modern and cool but to me it was ugly. Also the windows were floor to ceiling in the common rooms and slanted outwards which I couldn’t get anywhere near because it literally made me feel like I would fall out. This would be my last choice for dorms not even considering the extra price. My parents didn’t like the building either.

Kelly: The room they showed us was, interesting. It was longer than most rooms apparently because it was on the end, so it was also thinner. It was extremely small and not what I was expecting. I wasn’t allowed to see the bathrooms but the kitchen was nice, not including the fact that it was pretty tiny.

Towers: I heard this was the best dorm and had extremely huge kitchens. It may be because we were on a boys floor but I was actually pretty disgusted by the kitchen. It was old, dark, and run down. The stove was randomly stuck into the middle of a wall and every appliance looked dirty and broken. The couches were strewn around the room and it was overall highly unpleasant. The actual dorm room seemed much bigger than Kelly’s, but the kitchen/common area was such a turn-off that I really didn’t care about the room size much. However, I suppose if I bring a little fridge/microwave (which I hope to do) then the kitchen doesn’t matter too much. The room size was a pretty big bonus.

Myers: This was definitely my favorite dorm. It was only three stories so most people take the stairs, though there is an elevator. I liked this because of my dislike of elevators and I feel a little safer living closer to the ground lol. This was also the only dorm with a courtyard in the middle. The courtyard had benches and grills which is nice for people to cook in when the weather is good. The floors are co-ed which means about half of the floor is guys and half is girls which doesn’t really bother me since we still have separate bathrooms. Also it gives me a chance to meet everyone quickly, not just other girls. The rooms were a nice size, bigger than Kelly’s and about the same size or maybe a tiny bit smaller than Towers. Also it is directly next to Kelly, so it’s close to the little 7-11 type store and a Subway. The kitchen was small but way nicer than Towers (more like Kelly’s) and the common room was a bit bare but nicely kept. I saw both a guy’s and a girl’s rooms and both were nicely decorated and seemed like it would be nice to live in. I talked to a guy who had lived in both Towers and Myers and said he liked Myers better because it had been more social, though this could have just been a matter of chance. For those it interests, Myers also has learning communities where your roommate and neighbors are in the same major as you so you share interests and can study/do homework together. However, I was told that most students in Myers are not in a learning community.

Overall I would rank:

Myers

Towers

Kelly

Millenium

Blah, somewhat stupid question, but I was wondering if anyone knew what the typical stats were for a student getting merit-based aid?

What is the best way to find a room mate?

hey…there is a different post about this, but I thought I should put it here too, and if you know know anything about it Zack and anyone else, all feedback would be appreciated:
I have a couple questions about the program. Just really confused about making the decisions. If anyone can help, I would really appreciate it. First of all, I am accepted into the 5 year Masters in Biomedical Engineering accelerated degree program and was wondering if its worth it, or will it hurt me in the end. I hear how doing an MBA with your undergrad can hurt in the long run, is it the same with Biomedical Engineering? Also, I am also interested in business (undecided between business and engineering) so I was wondering, would it still be possible to pursue any kind of business degree while doing this accelerated degree program at all? Also are you still considered a full-time student while you are on your co-op? Any other feedback on the engineering program would be appreciated. Please help if you can!

SockherMom - Does your son have facebook? If so, he should join some Drexel groups.

Tell him to search: Drexel University, Drexel University Admissions, and Drexel University Class of 2014. For Music Industry majors there is also: Drexel Music Industry Freshman of 2010.

These groups are GREAT for meeting people who will be attending Drexel next year. Also in the Drexel University Class of 2014, there are discussion boards going for finding roommates. There is a small survey to fill out and post that will allow people to see your interests and allows you to see other people’s interests and find your best match.

I found an amazing girl that way who shares a lot of my interests, and if everything goes as planned, we’ll be rooming together next year. I’ve found that Facebook is the best way to connect/find a roommate!

Good luck!

Thanks again callmehaley…you are a great resource!!

is Honors dorm only available for students of Honors College??

i have roughly a 500 in Math and 600 for Writing and Reading for my SAT’S.(I have to send in my SAT scores since I have less than 24 credits earned) I am a college transfer student with last semester grades being a 3.1 GPA, I withdrew from a class last semester and now I have a B in the class. I sent a letter of recommendation along with my current grades which was 3 A’s a B and a C. What are my chances of getting in? Also, how long should it take to hear a reply?. THANK YOU :)

Next year Honors dorms will be in Millennium. Yes, Honors housing is only for Honors students.

There’s a chance that there will be non-honors students in Millennium if not all of the spaces are filled. That’s what happened when I lived in Race my freshman year, the top floor was international students and the bottom couple were non-honors freshmen. The year before that, though, the honors students spilled into another residence hall. It’s all dependent on how many students want honors housing versus non-honors.

Zack, can you tell me more about the engineering program?
My friend’s trying to decide between Drexel and PSU. Which school has a better engineering program if you know?

Thanks!

I am an international student and I almost decide to go to Drexel, but I still have some more question to ask.
First of all, as an international student, is there any limits or bias for us to find a coop?
Second, I have heard about the BS/MS accelerated program, I was an engineering student. It is said that it is impossible to finish this program in five years with 3coops. Is that right? I have APs to transfer about a semester credits.
Furthermore, are there many chances for student to study aboard and do overseas coop? I really appreciate the chance about that.
The last but not the least, are there many chances for us to do research for the proffessor during the semester of the summer vacation?
Thx a lot

I know you can request a roommate and all that, but I don’t know anyone at Drexel and I think it’s really awkward and more like a dating website the way people advertise themselves into finding roommates, so I don’t mind Drexel choosing a roommate for me.

Only thing is how exactly does that work? I’ve heard that you take like a personality test kind of thing and they pair you up in that way?

GZA, yeah, they ask you like 6 multiple choice questions.
Are you a smoker?
Do you study with television/music on or quiet?
Early bird or late owl?
How often do watch TV?
How often do you clean your room?
Do you want someone in the same college as you?

We visited Drexel/Westphal during accepted students’ day and were very impressed with Westphal and the Photography Program. Can anyone tell us more about its reputation, as well as advantages/disadvantages? Also, my son was also accepted to Hofstra University. Can anyone provide a compare/contrast between Hofstra and Drexel? Finally, national averages indicate that 50% of undergraduates change their majors in the 1st year, 75% after sophomore year. Is this the average for Drexel, or not. It would seem that Drexel would be the exception because it is more technically focused than a Liberal Arts College. If someone does change majors at Drexel, will that set them back? Please advise? Thanks! “Roo-sa-sha”

Don’t know about Drexel specifically but when I went to college (many moons ago) I don’t know many who remained in their declared major as a freshman. My son wanted to be a Chemistry major, Drexel told him “no” and now he is a Sports Management major…they said if he does well in his lower division Chemistry courses they will let him change. I have a feeling he is going to like Sports Management but he has already changed majors before he even started school…who knows…he may end up in pre-law!!

Hey–

im looking to transfer from Fashion Institute of Technology’s Advertising and Marketing Communications major to Drexel’s Graphic Design program.

I wanted to know the likely hood of getting accepted, I have a 3.4 GPA

I think I have a somewhat strong portfolio, although i will go on to say i am no expert at any program within the Adobe suite.

Thanks!

How is Drexel’s communication major?

What are usual courses that communication major freshman would take?

Are science or math classes required?

Thanks!

is freshman honors english a lot harder than normal freshman writing comp. at drexel? i still don’t know if i want to take it or not (i’m a bio major)

The normal freshman English is not an incredibly difficult sequence. If you get a good professor and have decent writing abilities, it will not be hard to get an A if you actually do all the required work. As for honors English, I know people that took it, and I heard that it was more rigorous, but it really depends on the professors. Some regular English classes were more difficult than others. Once you can register yourself for classes, it’s easy to figure out who the best professors are and take them (especially if you have priority registration through the honors college).

If you don’t like English that much, I wouldn’t torture yourself with taking the honors class. Take honors sections of the intro science classes instead.
