Any Elon Nursing Students Here?

We will be visiting next month as well!

Funny that we will all be there next month – we’ll be bombarding them with questions about national certification, I guess! After a little back and forth with the admissions and nursing departments, we were able to get a separate nursing tour in the afternoon (general tour in the morning). I will be visiting with my D26 and mother (who lives in Greensboro).

They do have their accreditation visit scheduled for Nov 2024. They have made a few program changes. I know they are working hard to get this final approval and are not concerned just dotting i’s and crossing t’s. It is very important to them as they hope to expand the program and offer graduate degrees. Also they have been through similar with their PA program so understand what is required. They have worked hard to get 100% NCLEX pass for their graduating classes so far as well.

Glad to hear that they’re working hard. It’s a big selling point for the university and I can’t imagine they’d risk not getting accredited.

Yes we are doing the same- general tour in AM, then nursing school after.

This is great to hear! Thanks for sharing

My D is extremely interested in Elon Nursing. Accepted, fellows, etc. But hasn’t committed yet. Direct Admit has been one of her (our) most important assets of university nursing programs that we’ve been seaking. D was accepted at 8 out of 9 universities she applied for, of which about 4-5 are direct admit. Obviously 4 of them are fully accredited too. Her top choices all cost nearly the same (+/- $5k), but there’s one university that’s not fully accredited yet. My D has zero desire to be a future nurse in the state of NC. This fiscally sound adult is trying to figure out:

a) should D be paying the exact same amount for Elon if it’s not national accredited yet?

b) is there a risk that D could go to Elon for a year or two and then “the floor drops out from under us” and we’re told the national respect isn’t coming after all? We aren’t risk takers. We prefer to place the risk on the other party and not absorb the risk ourselves. What’s dollar value of a four year education that’s only state approved versus national?

It is a LOT to consider. D26 is touring this coming Thursday with her dad. They are doing a separate tour of the nursing school after the admissions tour and he is def going to ask them all about the accreditation process and where they stand.

Please report back re: the tour generally and accreditation specifically – I am interested to hear your thoughts. We are visiting soon too

@nursedad2028, Congrats to your daughter! I am learning that nursing is a very hard admit, so 8 acceptances (5 direct admit) is impressive. As a parent, I wouldn’t hesitate to chat with someone in the Elon nursing dept. about your accreditation concern. I doubt it will impact your first question (the cost is the cost) but it may help assuage the fears expressed in your second question. Let us know what she decided!

D26 LOVED the nursing program. Her tour guide was a junior who was also in a sorority and so was able to speak about the social vibe as well. They are currently being visited in November for accreditation (that is about all DH remembers they told him when he asked).

Things D26 liked were the fact that it is direct admit, good clinical placements that are not too far, nice facilities, great academic support and really nice staff she met.

She really is hung up on the location of the school and the lack of game day culture. Students she spoke with said no one really goes to the games, and socially there are parties but that is about it. Sometimes they pile in a car and go to Greensborough but there really isn;t much to do off campus. She feels like it would be like high school all over again where parties are the main attraction and she is fine with parties but not as the only social outlet. While there are a to of campus activities available on campus, she wants to be able to walk into a town and shop, go out to eat, etc. Not drive 10 minutes just to get Starbucks (she could not believe there is no Starbucks on campus ). Game day is also really important to her- she wants the excitement on campus, the tailgating, etc. So she is struggling with loving the program vs. not loving the school itself.

Once you start having coffee other than Starbucks you realize what you’ve been missing.

Isn’t that the truth!?! That coffee shop across from campus (Oak?) is actually pretty good. I also really like Press in Graham, but you definitely need a car for that one.

We went to Press on Sunday! Worth the trip. The Oak House is great too.

Thanks for the report back. My D26 is visiting this Friday! It should be an interesting one. Like yours, mine desires “game day” festivities (not because of the parties, but because she is a full out sports fan). Plus we live in a big, urban environment, so she is used to that. But my mom lives in Greensboro and we are looking for direct admit nursing – so it is definitely worth a look and probably an application when the time comes (casting a wide net and all). We have previously visited Marquette (general and nursing tours) and University of Minnesota (general tour only), which are both urban campuses.

And for the current Elon parents – I’m gathering Oak House is the recommended coffee stop. What about lunch? Any recommendations? We have to eat between the general and nursing dept tours

D26 and DH had a really nice lunch at the Inn at Elon- right on campus. I hear Root is really good, but they decided to check out the on campus hotel and ate there. Both said their salads were delicious.

The Root is great for lunch. Fast, friendly, good fresh food. But the Inn might be closer to where your tours are and that’s a big plus.

If you’re looking for parking near the bookstore/root/tangent/ice cream later you can check behind the church that’s right there.

There are 2 coffee shops on campus Izaru (sp) is my sons favorite and acorn just opened in the library. Root is good too for food!

Thanks for the recommendations, everyone. We had a good lunch at The Root Trackside.

Campus is very beautiful, and my D26 liked the “vibe” – although she is not sold on the rural location. Also seems like there are some curricular adjustments being made in the nursing department as they work out the kinks. We had a freshman nursing student as our general tour guide (she was pretty funny) and a junior nursing student for the department tour. Learned a lot from both.

@coastal2024 – We got the impression that clinical placements were only nearby for the first few general rotations – at a nearby regional hospital with very few specialities – but by late junior year and senior year, clinicals could actually be very far away (50 minutes one way). One of the guides said you could either pick your locations or your specialties, but not both, senior year. Did you get different info?

Edited to add – My D loved the anatomical gift (cadaver) component of the nursing anatomy class!
