Does anyone use an air freshener similar to hotels, but not an HVAC one. I generally don’t like scented candle stores and such, but don’t object to subtle high end hotel freshness. If you have a good experience what is the brand of diffuser and the particular light, fresh, not perfume -y scent?
The safest way would be to diffuse pure essential oils. This is a good brand: Diffusers - Airome
Any other kind of ‘scent’ that is derived from a combination of chemicals is pretty much not safe.
I’ll second the diffuser and Airome essential oils. We’ve tried several solutions and this is my favorite. I have one in my home office.
Essential oils aren’t necessarily “safe”, and they are of course chemicals. They may be better than some of the synthetics, or single ingredient oils may be better than blends, but you’d need to look into studies on each oil to determine its safety.
My spouse is a chemist who specializes in pollution including aerosols, and we don’t use any kind of products that scent the air. We do keep a large HEPA air filter in our main living area that runs automatically as-needed. It keeps our house smelling fresh.
That’s how we do it, but of course, I don’t have any problem with however people decide to fragrance their own homes!
I’m a chemist, too, although not in environmental fields, and the only vaporizer we’ve ever used is a Feliway one to calm our feuding cats. No scented oils or Febrese here at all.
I got one of the hotel-type infusers. I loved it, but my dog reacted to it. It says pet safe, but everything I try (even if pet safe), he reacts to. He is 150 lbs, so this is not a case of the dog being so little that anything will affect it. (Fair warning, I probably spent about $200 on samples until I found the ones I liked)
I also have an air filter that does help with freshness. I always fear that we’ve become “nose blind” to our stinky drooly beast.
Appreciate this info and I just KNEW some chemist would chime in about essential oils also being chemicals LOL - you scientists!
Well, given the choice of lavender oil or ‘ocean breeze’ scent I’d still opt for an essential oil regardless, if one was to scent one’s house.
For myself, a good open windows policy and regular cleaning (and no pets) seems to suffice. Unless islandpapa1 cooks fish for dinner that is.
I got an Alen air purifier. It’s made a huge difference in my old house. I don’t use the ionizer. Far better to filter the air to make it fresh. Plus, it’s very quiet.
Upgrading/changing out the air filter on your furnace/hvac system regularly and using a good hepa vacuum cleaner regularly does wonders.
