Any Good Deals on a Tux??

DS is looking to buy a tux. Seems to me that about this time last year, several places were offering “Buy One, Get One Free” type deals. Anyone bought a tux lately?

If you have a Sym’s near you, a great price can be had.

SYMS is a good store to buy good but inexpensive tuxedos, tux shirts, tux bow ties, etc., if there is a SYMS store near you.

Tux stores often have good deals on slightly-used tuxedos.

Smart idea to buy one! Buying one costs less than renting one twice, I know.

Lukester, I have no suggestions on where to buy but I do have a suggestion on what to buy. Buy the classic tux and buy it with an expandable waistband. ;)

Thrift shop.

SteinMart

Cur-That expandable waist band only can go so far. It worked fine until after freshman year of college; we then had to buy a larger size that included a much bigger jacket!!

Oh, well, at least he got several wearings out of it with a few weddings, 2 proms, and a fraternity formal.

Son bought his on ebay. He had his measurements and bought exactly what he needed. Used it in high school and has used it both years in college so far.

Kat

Boys have to wear tuxes for concert band performances in the spring. Ask the mom of band boys (or maybe the band director) where to get a good, inexpensive tux.

I knew asking CC would give me great suggestions. Thanks!

J C Penny has tuxes for $99 and the quality is pretty good. We rent matching vests and ties from smaller formalwear shops for around $25 to change the look for each prom, but you could buy a neutral vest and tie. Larger formalwear shops don’t seem to want to rent out “part” of their formalwear.

We bought an expensive designer Tux super on sale at SYMS. The final cost was $60.00, $65 with the inevitable shortening my 5/8" son needed.

This was cheaper than a rental and the hi fashion design made it cut narrower than a standard tux which is perfect for my very slender son.

He has worn it to proms and performance dates (musical ensembles). So right now we’re at about $15 per wearing.

Keezer’s in Cambridge sells used (former rental) tuxes at great prices. Other rental shops may also sell their used merchandise. The ones I’ve seen look great, and you wouldn’t know they are not new.

crying here…since I just paid $170 X2 (DH, DS) to rent a tux for my son’s wedding…Had to be a “certain” style to match…so I couldn’t buy. I nearly dropped over! I didn’t pay that much for my dress and shoes combined :(

That’s where I get mine (among other things, I’m a singer), and have never been disappointed.

My father bought a high quality tux at Paul Stuart when he was a senior in college in 1951. He gave it to me in 1972 when he bought a new (then-more fashionable, now much uglier) one. I sort of outgrew it, laterally, in the late 80s, but I gave it to my son a couple of years ago.

It has seen a LOT of action along the way (I can only vouch for some of it personally). Engagements in which many studs, cufflinks, and even ties went MIA and never made it home. It has danced to Benny Goodman, Peter Duchin, and Duke Ellington, and to 50 Cent (but not in person).

Even with several alterations and repairs, it has cost pennies per event. And the way it makes my son look like James Bond – the REAL James Bond, the young-Connery James Bond: priceless.

^^^^^awwwww

When the boys rented tuxes for prom last year they weren’t aware that their team would make it as far in the post season as they did. Of course the state semi-finals fell out on prom night! The boys got back the money for the prom (minus 10%) and flowers, were able to cancel limos, and, if they rented at one place in town, only lost the deposits on the tuxes. That is except for those who rented at another place and had charged the price of the tux rental instead of just leaving a deposit (they thought it would be easier). This place took advantage and kept the full tux rental price even though the boys called as soon as they knew they would not be attending - granted it was the morning before prom, but they got home from the quarter finals at 1 that morning. This place also had the nerve to call parents who had only left a deposit and demand the rest of the rental price (they didn’t get it - isn’t that what a deposit is for?). My advice to all prom attendees (and other consumers) is to leave as small a deposit as necessary - you never know what will happen and how petty certain merchants can be.

Jos. Banks has all their tuxedos on sale at the moment. My advice is to buy the best looking, but least expensive, one you can find while in college. Once out, buy a better one that is properly fitted, i.e. w/o an adjustable waistband. It will look much better.

Don’t feel bad - I am invited to a wedding in the UK this spring and it is the full “Four Weddings and a Funeral” dress for the wedding guests - i.e. morning coat (cutaway), waistcoat, striped pants, etc. I drew the line at the top hat. My friends in the UK are amazed that I don’t own that outfit. Apparently, they wear it on a regular basis.
