Sigh, the same week we had to buy DS1 a suit for a job fair (for internships) he texts me to say that his 4 year old laptop seems to be spiraling towards death.

If anyone knows of a good deal on laptops please let me know. DS1 is in ChemEngr, but they really only use their laptops to login to VMs on campus to do the computational work. I’d prefer an Intel processor and 6-8Mb memory.

I’m normally a good bargain shopper, but I have a lot going on this week and could use some help!

Two excellent sites for info on deals are www.slickdeals.net and www.edealinfo.com Good luck!

Also look at www.tigerdirect.com if you would consider a refurbished laptop.
I got an HP Pavillion full sized laptop, refurbished, from them for $299 last month. The deals change often so check back periodically.

Megmno, did you purchase an extended warranty or use an AEX card? My son had a great deal of difficulty with Tiger Direct, even with the warranty. Costco on line has an HP Envy on sale for $599.

I would be very leery of most $300-500 laptops…

Check Lenovo’s student discount offerings. DD1 dropped hers on the floor (carpet thankfully) and nothing happened to it (Thinkpad T420). It is a $1k laptop, granted, but in my experience money ‘saved’ on computers may not be worth it at the end.

DH just got a great deal on a laptop at Office Depot, he bought an in store “demo” that was “damaged”. The damage is a scratch the size of pin head on the case. He doesn’t care about the scratch, loves the laptop, saved $250+.

What’s the possibility of waiting a couple of months? The Haswell architecture Intel is moving to early next year will be a dramatic improvement in performance and efficiency.

If there’s hard drive problems, that’s an easy $60 fix. Actually, most anything on a laptop can be replaced around this price point. It’s worth it to wait it out just a bit for what’s coming.
