Any good websites to sell DS's clothes?

He finally went through the boxes of clothes I’d been storing for him through 2 moves and there’s a lot of stuff (some of it decent) that he doesn’t want any more. Besides ebay, are there any sites you’ve used to sell used clothing? I don’t mean the stretched out basketball shorts or sweat stained t-shirts – he has some nice fleece vests and sweaters and polo shirts.

I’m not sure if it’s more trouble than it’s worth and if I should just donate them but thought I’d ask. Thanks all!

I would look for a brick and mortar consignment store that takes men’s stuff. Web outfits tend to deal with higher end designer stuff.

Any consignment stores near you? They usually have far less guy clothes…and welcome those donations (if they sell guy clothes).

I have to say…for the polo shirts…they would, have to be in excellent condition…not stretched out at all…no logos…to get even taken by a consignment shop.

And some consignment stores don’t take things older than 2-3 years.

@thumper1 – thank you – there are some consignment shops near me I could check out. Might be easier than dealing with shipping things. I have a feeling there isn’t much residual value in his things but some were expensive. Maybe the outerwear as you say could be consigned. Thanks!

You might also think about donating them to a charity thrift store…and taking the tax thing for donations.

If I tell my local cosignment store that I have boys denim in my drop off bag, it immediatly gets open and put on the sales floor vs. if it’s all girls clothing - then it waits until there is room.

Right (donating to charity thrift store) – I was thinking of that too.

@threebeans – how much do you get when you consign boys denim?

I know you said besides eBay…but I have to put in a vote for…eBay! Maybe at least for the more substantial items like nice fleece vests (if they are a brand name). Ebay does take some time - writing up the ad, post office when you finally sell…BUT if you price competitively (less than what others may be asking on eBay but much more than the paltry amount you may get from consignment) you might have good luck - especially now going into the fall/winter season when people will look for fleece.

The other thing we sometimes do (my H does a lot of eBay so I will take advantage of his site and post clothing too) is to post a grouping - so like “Lot of 3 Ralph Lauren Polos” - so sell a grouping rather than every one separately - less work for you and the buyer might like getting a lot of similar sized items for a good price - and then you only have to ship one package as opposed to three!

On eBay always have the buyer pay the shipping too - you’ll make out better that way.

@Classof2015 a lot will depend on the brand name of those denim jeans. And the condition…and the size.

If you have high end denim, you will get more than for JCPenney or Sears brand…or Walmart or Target.

So…do you have…American Eagle? Hollister? Or the like?

Same with the vests…columbia? REI, EMS? NOrthface? Or brand X.

Another idea…any chance there is a neighborhood tag sale?

OR…a neighborhood FB page?

Or even your own FB page? You could say…for sale…make an offer. Post pictures.

In today’s Washington Post: https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/home/how-to-get-the-most-money-for-your-used-clothes/2017/08/14/2e5c9a00-7c4d-11e7-a669-b400c5c7e1cc_story.html?utm_term=.6892398deac7

If you’ve used up your free WaPo articles this month, let me know, and I’ll figure out how to get the info to you.

Keep in mind if you sell it on a website, you need to take several good pictures, have exact measurements, write a clear and descriptive listing, factor in the shipping fee, and pay a portion of your proceeds to the website. Oh, and you might have to purchase shipping envelopes or boxes. Is it worth it?

Try Poshmark! It’s mostly women’s clothing but I believe they have a men’s section as well.

If I tell my local cosignment store that I have boys denim in my drop off bag, it immediatly gets open and put on the sales floor vs. if it’s all girls clothing - then it waits until there is room.

@threebeans

YMMV on the jeans getting put out quickly…and also what you can get for them…depending on the brand names…and the location of your consignment store.

How much do you net per pair of jeans when you consign them.

Wow thanks everyone! @thumper1 – the fleece are mostly Patagonia; some Peter Millar and Brooks Brothers. These were Christmas and birthday gifts that I spent a pretty penny on.

Not too many neighborhood tag sales in my nabe unfortunately and I’m not on FB but both good ideas. Maybe this is the reason to be on FB!

@FlyMeToTheMoon – I know – that’s the part I’m not crazy about. Plus standing in line at the post office (my time has some value – not sure how much lol).

@happymomof1 – thank you! I was able to click on it and read it – never heard of a lot of those sites but lots of great ideas. @apresski – Thanks – Poshmark was in happymom’s article – good to hear it backed up from you!

Call the guidance counselor or office manager at a low income high school. There are kids who could desperately need a good fleece, sweater, etc.

My D’s sell clothes at shops that will give them cash versus selling on consignment. They use Plato’s Closet and Buffalo Exchange. I know that Plato’s closet has locations in many states. My D’s are into fashion and they both have a lot of clothes, shoes and purses. They both just cleaned out their closets and between the two of them netted over $600. My older D sells designer jeans on ebay and gets decent prices for them. She also sold some Michael Kors watches that both girls had and no longer used on ebay as well as some lower end designer purses.

Would you S take the responsibility for selling them himself? Does he want extra cash in his pockets? Patagonia fleece is going to be a popular item to sell online - through whatever venue.

It amazes me the stuff I see people buy online - FB or Ebay - they literally are willing to drive across town to buy one clothing item (meeting in a public place).

@showmom858 --good tip – yes I would much rather have cash in hand than wait for a consignment sale to occur. I’ll see if there are those outlets near me.

@abasket – hahaha – the answer would be no – he has a vibrant social life (euphemism). If I sell them, I’m pocketing the cash. DH is a big CL user and we have traveled miles to get stuff at a good price.
