Any hope for 122 psat?

My cousin has done really bad on the PSAT and my uncle wants to know if there is any hope for him. He never took a SAT or PSAT before and did not study. He is from Germany but he speaks english well. What should I tell him to do?

Uhh 122 out of 240 or 122 out of 160? If it’s 240, then he should have no problem cause all you have to get is like in the 30s for each subject, which is like super easy. If it’s out of 160, well that’s actually quite hard for a foreigner although concentrating on Math might help.

out of 240

its possible, but only if hes willing to work hard. 122 boosting to 180 is quite easy, but he must be dedicated to do so.

Tell him to go buy a PSAT prep book like Princeton Review or Kaplan.

He should look at what he’s doing wrong and then try to correct his mistakes. That doesn’t necessarily require a PSAT prep book. If he’s doing poorly in math, for example, then a book like Gruber’s SAT can help him learn the math concepts and give him practice problems to practice his skills. If he does poorly in reading passages, he should try to get used to reading interesting articles in the newspaper and magazines and books and improve his vocabulary. If he is struggling with writing, then he should refresh or learn the basic rules of English grammar (and the PSAT should make it clear to him what grammar he knows and doesn’t know). If psychological factors like fear are at work, then that should be solved as well. So before he goes out to the store and buys a bunch of books and mindlessly reads them (which a lot of people do for no really logical reason), he should concentrate on what his weaknesses are, and then take action to fix those weaknesses. Why make the same mistake over and over again? Once he starts realizing his mistakes and begins to correct them, his score will go up. That is the common sense way to approach this. Also, he should set a reasonable goal within a reasonable timeframe. Going from 122 to, say, 200 in three months might be possible but it is certainly unlikely.

I know a student whose 10th grade year psat score was similar to your cousin’s. He will be a senior this fall, and his practice tests scores are about 2000. Your cousin also can do so if he works hard.
