Hi all, i am a singaporean, interested to admit into the cs program. I heard it is very difficult to get into? Roughly what are the requirements for SAT and stuff?
But i did not do very well for my diploma program, getting a gpa of 2.8 out of 4.
I am planning to take SAT soon and is there any way to boost my chances of getting in? I got good testimonials from teachers and some friends who have worked in big movies like harry potter and titanic. I myself is working in an animation company in singapore, doing a feature animation film. I think i might take english for SAT although english is my first language? Any opinions and suggestons anyone? Is portfolio and reccomendation letters needed for submission?

You need to give us more information about yourself. Are you expecting to apply as a freshman or as a transfer applicant? Do you have strong extracirricular background? English ability is a skill that most schools expect you to have prior to attendance.

hi spark, i am applying as a freshman. extracirricular background as in? During my diploma program, i did not spend time for activities outside my school cirriculum cause i am busy learning about computer graphics during that time. For english, english is the first language in singapore and i took the GCE O levels during secondary. GCE O levels is a british exam and we are certified by cambridge university of UK. But again, i might want to take english during SAT to improve my english.

If you have absolutely no extracurriccular activities, then you probably going to have difficulty in admissions to most universities in, say, the top 25 in the US. Because there are so many students with high SAT scores and good GPAs, they care a lot about extracurriculars.

what kind of activites will it be considered extra cirricular?
Well right now the activites i have participated are:
i) Interactive Media Club
-cyber games partipant

ii)National Day celebrations 2006
-multimedia crew

iii)freshman orientation 2003-2004
-particpant

iv)Singapore IT exhibiton 2005
-helper

v)National software Competition
-helper

vi)Basketball team player (4 years)

Well, i think since these are singapore events, you guys might not know what they are. Anyone can state some examples of extra cirricular activites and how much is needed or whatsoever?

P/s : Extra cirricular activites are not popular in my country so i hope someone can give my guidance.

ECs aren’t very popular in other Asian countries like Korea, China, etc, but usually, the top applicants find a way to get involved.

Have you already applied for fall 07? Or are you planning to apply for 08?

Some EXAMPLES of ECs are like, model UN, sports, school government, newspaper, amnesty international club, math club, etc…
I highly recommend you to look outside your school if your school does not cater ECs.

I’m not sure if your Cyber games participant counts as an EC… Actually, I’m sure it doesn’t.

You need to take the most amount of A levels offered at your school, and you gotta raise that 2.8 GPA up.
And the Critical reading and writing sections are mandatory when you take the SATs - so you cant pick and choose or anything like that.
