Just curious if there has been anything said about how Trump’s plan for closing the borders will change anything in regard to US college admission for Int’l students. I know the number has been rising in recent years and aid is also given for non-US students.
Nothing related to this topic has been mentioned, but keep in mind that international students on student visas are not immigrants and, therefore, wouldn’t be impacted by any changes in laws or rules related to immigration policies.
The only thing I have heard about is deportation of ILLEGAL immigrants. People in the country with student visas are not here illegally.
I don’t think anything is going to change as far as college admissions for international students either.
Expect changes to the LPT/OPT visa process. That won’t impact overseas students who plan to return home after completing their education, but WILL impact anyone whose plan is to stay.
Yes, that’s possible. But just like student visas, OPT also does not by itself provide a path to immigration (permanent residency). Students need to get a dual-intent work visa like an H1B to progress towards a green card. So rather than changes to OPT, I expect major restrictions on H1B and other work visas.
Key people in the new administration like Elon Musk have said that we should work to expand the pathways for legal high-skilled immigration. I would imagine the interest of international applicants in US schools will ultimately increase as a result.
The current cutbacks and downsizing in the tech sector means that what was a shortage five years ago could right now be a surplus. So I would not bet money on what’s going to happen. These boom and bust cycles in tech always create havoc-- in the actual, real job market, and the perceived “who is benefiting from current policies”. There is still a significant number of people who believe that giving H1B’s to foreign workers – even those with a Master’s or doctorate-- means the ability to pay them less than a native born employee. So the perception is that Musk is arguing on the basis of his own pocketbook- increase the number of legal immigrants who are qualified to work at his companies in some CS role-- and you drive the salaries down. More workers, less money.
The data does not appear to bear this out. But try arguing with a nativist POV in the face of the actual labor market!!!
Agree that there is an oversupply in the IT sector but there are plenty of other fields where skilled immigration can be of big benefit for the US, as it has always been historically. I don’t think Musk cares about his pocketbook at this point BTW, but that is unrelated.
