<p>My D will be living with a roommate and they want to be able to accommodate parents/visitors that may sleep over. </p>
<p>Does anyone have any suggestions of inexpensive futons or couches where the back folds down into a bed? They do not have a lot of space in their “living room” and need something that does not take up a lot of space and is VERY affordable.</p>

<p>You can get nice queen sized futon couches for about 400$; not inexpensive, but easy to change and upgrade with just a new futon cover, and comfortable enough to use as a regular couch. I am not suggesting any brand in particular, but you can google search them and get them delivered.</p>
<p>An airbed will likely be more comfortable than a cheap fold out couch and will be MUCH easier to move.
Fold out sofas are awfully heavy.

<p>That time of year is coming where futons will be featured in lots of places including bargain places like Walmart, Target, etc. Other options include Ikea which has futons or chairs that “fold out” into a single bed. Other option - aerobeds which are available at Costco, BBB, etc. Costco has a queen one on sale this month I believe. </p>
<p>What is VERY AFFORDABLE? It would help for you to list a budget. </p>
<p>If you have a Verlo Mattress Factory store in your state (or the state in which you will be attending school) they have a very nice quality queen futon for about $400. It makes a very comfortable couch and folds out into a comfy bed but my daughter has had many friends just sleep on it while it was in the couch position. A wide variety of washable covers are available. It fit perfectly under her lofted bed. She brought it home this summer because she will be abroad next semester and then living in a furnished apartment but she plans to use it in the future and it looks brand new. Target sells cheap futons but they are junky, IMHO, and I’ve seen countless numbers of them left out in the trash on move-out day.</p>
<p>IKEA has a couple different types - we just looked at some over the weekend. The size that folds out into a double bed was around $400 including the best of the three mattress choices (and from my D’s experience, you don’t want either of the lesser mattresses).</p>
<p>Try looking on Amazon dot com and also Overstock dot com. They usually have lots of choices in many price ranges. My S bought one at a local furniture store that was going out of business several years ago in the $300-$400 price range and he gets a ton of use from it, well worth it. Still in very good shape. Just make sure you look at the on line reviews first. Both websites should offer free shipping…I think…</p>
<p>Costco sometimes offers these as well, with oak hardwood frames and decent mattresses. The mattress is the key, otherwise you totally feel the frame while lying on the futon. </p>
<p>There are high quality dense foam folding futons that are another option, no wood at all. Air beds are ok, but tend to develop leaks over time. We prefer the filming high quality folding futons over air beds, personally. </p>
<p>Do NOT choose the Target, WalMart or KMart futons. You can definitely feel the frames, even when you touch the mattress in the store. </p>
<p>Our kids have both been ok with beds from IKEA. S bought a lovely firm sofa bed that we slept on for a week and found very comfortable. My niece slept on it for a month and had no complaints. The mattresses on their less expensive beds tend to not last much over a few years, according to both S and D. Not sure what price S paid but he tends to be a very careful shopper. </p>
<p>Though I suggested Walmart, Target as inexpensive options, I also would not recommend them for anything more than a college student crashing for a night. At least not the $99 kind! I’d rather sleep on an aerobes than one of these.</p>
<p>We have one of the heavy oak frame ones at our cottage with one of the better choice of mattresses - it’s very comfortable - my sleeping place of choice if I get to choose!!!</p>

<p>This one is very similar to the one my S bought from a local “going out of business” sale. This one is half the price that my S paid, but similar in style. It’s on overstock dot com. They ship for free. I just ordered an area rug for my S2 for college in the Fall. I’ve bought several large items through overstock and have always been pleased. No returns.
I just looked quickly…there’s probably a lot more to choose from! I personally am not a fan of the old style wooden frame ones…they’ve come a long way since those styles!</p>
<p>When son was in Cambridge, we went to a futon store. There were many options in terms of frames, and then mattresses. His friend slept on this for 4 months. I did for 2 nights, and it was fine. The $400 or so we spent was still less than a sleeper sofa. Like so much other furniture, with son moving coast to coast, this futon went to Salvation Army.</p>
<p>H bought a nice futon decades ago. When S was going to college, I bought a nice maple frame on Craigslist. It’s the kid that can be either a sofa or flatten out to be a full/queen bed. I also bought a waterproof futon bed pad and a futon fitted sheet.</p>
