Trying to get some information about 92Y in Manhattan as a year round option for my daughter. Many of the posts I’ve read are dated. Some of the Yelp posts mention construction work going on at the Y. Would appreciate some help from this community! Thank you
Safe, great community, fantastic location for mass transit.
There is construction going on everywhere in NYC, you just can’t avoid it.
What are your specific concerns?
Agree with blossom - great location, safe, easy to get to mass transit. My gym! I haven’t noticed construction when there.
OP - what do you mean by year round option for your daughter at the Y? It is a great location. My younger daughter lived there for a summer when doing an internship in NYC. She said it was a great facility. If you are considering it for pre-school it is probably one of the toughest place to get into.
Excellent place, and great facility. Nice neighborhood.
When does your kiddo want to move there…and is she a professional or a college student.
Where will she be working or attending school?
It’s not a college dorm. If you are looking for grad school lodging, I would suggest International House… it it’s probably full for this fall also.
I can tell you…this place fills up very quickly, and if this move is soon, there very well could be NO availability.
We’ve heard from someone who stayed there that the rooms are very small, there is a lot of turnover and it is hard to make friends. Also that food gets stolen from the kitchens (I guess she could keep food in her own room). I called the Y - they said there is facade work going on from the 5th floor down.
She’s an incoming grad student at Mannes New School
Did you look at international house?
The “complaints” you heard about 92nd Street Y…were they second hand info or from grad students whomhave stayed there. We know folks who have lived there for various internship and gave it a five star rating.
For fall…are there even still openings?
I just asked D2 again about her experience at the Y. She had one of the larger rooms and it was plenty big for 2 people. She also cooked there sometimes and no food was stolen. She said the security was pretty good. It is not easy to get a room there.
S lived at International House when he was at Columbia J School. It’s a great place.
Agreed about International House. I know several grad students who have stayed there and liked it a lot. I doubt, though, that there are any spots left for this fall. It’s a popular spot.
My son lived there for 2 semesters. Well run. Any questions feel free to PM.
@blevine I would love to hear more about your son’s experience. Which part of international house did he live in? Did he cook his own meals? We are trying to make a decision between 92Y and International House and need to decide by Saturday night so any information you can provide would be great!
@oldfort I would love to hear more about your daughter’s experience at 92Y. Perhaps you can DM me. Sorry but I can’t seem to figure out how to send any private messages!

I don’t that much more to share about D2’s experience at the Y. She said it was very nice and she felt very secure there and it was very convenient to every where she wanted to go.
One time when I couldn’t reach her on phone, I called Y’s security and they found her for me.
