Any merit aid available for upperclassmen?

Well, we have exhausted all avenues for any financial aid for my D who will be a freshman at GW in the fall. No need-based aid and she received a nice email from admissions denying her appeal for merit aid. We have next year figured out, but are hoping there might be some options for merit aid for her as a sophmore and beyond. Is there any money available after freshman year and, if so, what are the requirements?

If you join one of the spirit programs you can get merit aid. You can also apply to become an RA to get a free room. I believe if you hold certain positions like editor of the paper, etc you get some type of merit money(not absolutely sure about this).

what is a spirit program? Can you get merit aid for being on executive board of organizations on campus?

Maintain a 3.7 and you can receive the Presidential Scholarship, which covers half tuition. I believe it cuts into your financial aid though if you are receiving that.

The spirit programs are the dance team/cheer squad. I don’t know about positions on the exec board. As for the scholarship for GPA over 3.7, I don’t think GW is doing that program going forward for entering classes.

Presidential Scholarship

A partial tuition award is available to continuing students who currently are not receiving a merit scholarship. Eligibility for this award is determined annually at the end of the spring term. A student must have been enrolled on campus at GW and completed at least 15 credit hours per semester (a minimum of 30 credit hours) during the preceding fall/spring terms. Credits earned during summer terms or while on Study Abroad are not included in the credit hour calculation. Students who matriculated at GW fall 2003 and thereafter must have a cumulative 3.7 GPA or higher.
