Hi,

I am administrator of a website called Hidden Discoveries. I’m not sure if this message board will allow the hyperlink to show up so if you search “Hidden Discoveries,” it’s the first one that comes up.

Hidden Discoveries is mainly known for an international math competition which began this school year (2008-2009). There were about 20-30 participants from several countries around the world, and I wrote the entire math contest. For those who are familiar with MAA’s AMC, this competition was an actual contest to provide simulation of it.

Starting in this summer, I hope to add a Reading Passage Competition to it because as much as math is an interesting topic, reading seems to be the topic that everyone knows how to do and yet, only selective people can really do it well.

I am writing up this message to ask any parent who wants to give their child(ren) an interesting opportunity to work and learn about various topics through reading and writing during the summer. As a currently freshman in college, I have learned that there are many areas that the high school does not prepare well. For me, it was politics, history, and economics whereas for some of my peers, it was chemistry, biology, and mathematics. This project is highly motivated from my aspect on my own desire to learn and become an educated person aside from education from a liberal arts college.

There are already two very motivated students who plan to work with me this summer. Basically, the format will consist of weekly reading on specific topic based on newspapers and books, and I can assure that the readings will be quite more than what normal high school student receives. But at the same time, it will be interesting because we will be able to explore much deeper into various topics that we normally can’t in our lives (i.e. not like high school where information is simply thrown into students). One of the best benefits of this project is that because we will go in-depth, we will be able to ask questions instead of just accept the readings.

I understand that summer is time to relax so this might sound ridiculous to some people. But I think that instead of trying to cram for standardized tests at the last minute (which I did), doing some type of organized readings during the summer will immensely improve your skills that will come handy not just for tests but for undergrads and grads studies.

I also know that you might be doubtful to hear a freshman in college asking high school parents to work with him. I know my limitation and I want to emphasize that I am not here to teach anyone. Instead, I am simply looking for students who I can work with and help me learn. And at the same time, I hope that they can get something out of it too.

Please let me know if you are interested.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,
