Any plans for Cal/UCSF to offer a joint B.S/M.D

I think Cal and UCSF should have a B.S/M.D program, does any one know if there are any plans to make this happen. It would be great since you could get your undergrad work at the top UC and your M.D at the top UC medical school.

probably not… the reason schools offer the BS/MD program is to attract good students who normally wouldn’t come to their school.

… actually they are usually offered to produce more primary care physicians in states where there is a serious shortage.

iu agree with studious. i think ur wrong melodious. Look at all the med programs out their. You have the top stuents applying to med programs where the med school isnt even ranked in top 50.

BA/MD programs were initiated for either of the two reasons study guy and melodious talked about: to attract best of best students, and to produce physicians if there is a shortage

northwestern and penn state i believe started their ba/md programs b/c they anticipated a shortage of doctors after everyone was interested in space travel, engineering, aeronautics and the sort in the 70’s after we landed on the moon… so they wanted to attract students to become doctors by offering this ba/md program this is what I was told when I was interviewed at penn state… i know many other old programs were made for this reason

some of the newer programs, such as Pitt’s Ba/MD program, was specifically made to attract the brightest of the brightest students

so it depends, the program’s motive could be either of what studyguy and melodious mentioned

yeah… would never just make stuff up. :)

So UCSF wouldn’t have a need to create a program since they already attract a lot of brightest, and there are plenty of people applying there.

exactly. that’s what i was getting at :)

they actually do kind of have a program like it but nothing anybody here would be interested in. in ur 2nd or 3rd year at cal you can apply to a joint program between cal and ucsf where you recieve a masters and md. after grad, you spen 2 years at cal and 2 years at ucsf
