I’m an incoming freshman looking to join a Business frat. However, I don’t drink. Will that be a problem?

Thanks

It shouldn’t be for any business frat I would think. Technically you shouldn’t be required to drink for any frat (business or social), but business frats are so different that I don’t see you having an issue.

What exactly do people do in fraternities, anyway? I don’t want to join if it is just drunken idiocy.

Fraternities are ideally meant to be social groups that promote friendship and service. Most of the fraternities on campus are social fraternities, meaning they are geared more toward the social events such as brotherhood outings, parties, sorority mixers, concerts, and more. You also have professional fraternities like the business ones, which still promote the same two concepts in the first sentence, but do it in a totally different way.

My description probably isn’t the best. You can see for yourself how things are when you reach Cornell, but I assure you it’s not merely drunken idiocy, despite the people who make it seem like it is.

Maybe among some of the better frats it is not. But that “drunken idiocy” definitely happens in a good number of them. Just have to find the right ones.

The single best reason to join a frat is for the immense social opportunities it opens up during college. It’s one of the easiest ways to meet new people on campus.

Business frats (professional frats in general) though are extremely lame and are for tools…I don’t think they even take first semester freshmen. You’d be better off going to some company’s networking event on campus (there are always tons in the fall) and getting your school’s career services to look at your resume.

And yes, a decent amount of drinking goes on with biz frats.

Well, social frats don’t take first semester freshmen either. But as someone said, any frat is definitely an easy way to make friends on this campus, for after your first semester, you’ll find that other students will want to socially open up a lot less frequently.

^agree with that point
