Any Questions about UCSD?

Which ones you are required to take (Writing, Math, Foreign) will determine if you have to take them in person or online. I am exempt from writing, but I need to take math and foreign language. I will take foreign language online, but I need to take math at UCSD.

I have a quick question about AP credits.

I passed calculus AB with a 5 and will probably pass calculus BC this year with at least a 4. This exempts me from Math 20 A/B, so what does exempt really mean? Will I not have to take either Math 20 class and just have it as a pass? I’m an economics major but I plan to take the Math 20 series anyway, so I’ll have to finish 20C eventually.

Also, it fulfills 2 formal skills requirements (I’m in Warren). So does that mean I’ll just have 2 less classes to do? Thanks!

Btw, is is PHIL 27 and POLI 27 together, or PHIL 27/28 together?

How do you find out which placement test you are required to take, from what I heard at Revelle on admit day was that the only placement tests are language and math and I’m exempt from both, does that mean I dont have to do any of that stuff?

@Adamantoise

since u passed and got 5 on ur ap calc ab and will likely pass ur bc, you will be exempt from Math20A and Math20B. This means when u start school in the fall u will take Math20C (which is what i did fall quarter). Exempt means you DO NOT have to take the course, you have satisfied it thru ap scores, (ie. Math20A is ap calc AB, and Math20B is ap calc BC, so whats the point of taking the class again in college?).

yes, math satisfies the formal skills requirement.

phil27 and poli 27 are essential the same class. phil 28 and poli 28 are also essential the same class.
to satisfy warren GE req, you must take phil27/poli27 and phil 28/poli28, where u choose whether u want to take the phil series or the poli series. note that u DO NOT take BOTH phil27/poli27 AND phil28/poli28. rather, u take, for example. phil27 AND phil 28.

BUTTTTT u will need to take warren writing before u even think about phil/poli 27/28. good luck in warren writing…just warning u, its gonna be a b*tch :(

^To rephrase that slightly differently, they just gave the same class two different names for whatever reason.

Is it the exact same class? Also, would people taking Poli 27 be in the same lecture/discussion as students in Phil 27?

^Yeah, exactly the same. It’s in the same lecture hall, at the same time, with the same professor, with the same assignments, with the same curve (or however they grade). The only thing that might be different are the times of discussion sections but the content of them would be exactly the same, so really there is absolutely no difference. It’s just a formality they have so they split the class between two departments. Nothing will be different if you decide to sign up for POLI 27 as opposed to PHIL 27 and vice versa.

Can you take Phil 27 and then Poli 28? (in case the one of the same series fills up)

@diablonecros: Thanks for clearing that up for me, I appreciate it :slight_smile:
I’m not looking forward to Warren writing now :(

^Don’t listen to diablonecros. It’s not THAT bad.

@JeSuis

Yeah.

Is it difficult to graduate in three years from UCSD?

Im hoping I can do it in four

@Tyler: What college are you in?

^^^Marshall

I’m graduating in 3 years and I’m in ERC, the college with THE highest (or 2nd highest, tied with Revelle) number of GEs. And I went abroad for a quarter -anything is possible. (Unless you’re an engineering major, then probably not)

Who gets priority enrollment?

^Regents Scholars, athletes, UCSD tour guides… is there anyone else I’m missing? After them it goes by number of units you have accumulated.

^ I see. Does this rule apply throughout the summer as well?

And are you listing those groups by the order they get priority enrollment or do all three of those groups have priority enrollment at the same time?

priority enrollment at the same time.

grad students also go around then. the intention is that grad students don’t need to enroll in undergrad classes and therefore won’t take up valuable spots, but there’s nothing to stop a grad student from enrolling in a language or whatever for fun.

Tour guides get priority registration?? I’m assuming it’s extremely competitive to get a job as a tour guide, then.
