Any Questions about UCSD?

i made a forum post to this question as weel [ in a more borader sense] but here it is narrowed down… maybe someone can help me.

as some may know from reading my “chance me threads” I want ot be a pharmacist. My question is: how does one go about “transferring” from UCSD to a Pharm School [kinda like Skaggs.
What i mean is I would finish my GE’s etc. and the Pre-Pharm Pre-Reqs. in my third year in UCSD. Then I start to apply to say Skaggs, UOP, USF for admission into their Pharm.D programs. Say I get into USF… what would I do? Do i just quit UCSD nad go to USF?

I’m not there yet, but i would like ot make a "calender of things that i should keep in mind… I already made the stupid mistake of not applying to UOP’s 5/6 year Pharm program…

@spatel23
If you are applying to X pharmacy school during your senior year of undergrad and get accepted then I assume you would be starting at X pharmacy school in the Fall after graduating?

Coolaid317 -no.
for example say i was a UCSD freshman in 2008. only that class would be eligible for UCSD’s Skagg’s pharmacy for Fall 2011. so you see, in my case, i would be skipping senior year.

you could just finish your major in 3 years and make your own version of an accelerated program … if you have a healthy helping of transferred credit, declare a sensible major, and aren’t afraid of 16 units/quarter, there’s no reason you can’t finish most of the bio/chem majors in three years.

lol astrina! i was just hoping you would reply!!
how long did you stay at UCSD?

five years, for a BS and MS.

it’s great that you’re thinking about post-grad plans so early, but relax! enjoy the first part of college! as long as you keep your grades up and develop good relationships with your friends and mentors, everything will fall into place once the time comes to decide what you’ll do next. and who knows, maybe another idea will replace pharm school? let college be more an experience to expose you to new things, rather than a single gateway to what you think is your calling (right now).

yeah you do have a point… it’s just that im kinda disappointed that i could’ve gotten my Pharm. D in 5 years so im wanting to try everything i’ve got and try my best to finish as early as possible… but still thanks for the advice… definitely keep that in mind :)

Thought I’d revive this thread instead of making a new one, since I only have one question.

Concerning health coverage, what does the plan cover? Does it include dental, optometry, general checkups, or just things like emergency visits/prescriptions? I’ve noticed that the price for health coverage at UCSD is around $800 but at other UCs, UCSHIP costs only $500.

try googling, maybe?

OK question, I’ve heard before you can order stuff from Earl’s online, is this still true?

@mbfox125
no. earl’s online doesnt exist anymore i presume?
idk, but this past year, there was no earl’s online.
all the markets sold that stuff though–pots, pans, water filters, coffee grinders, and other kitchen appliances near the end of the year–beginning of may i think?

Apparently it’s been out of service since at least 2010

ok have another question :slight_smile:
UCSD’s tuition fee [with all the other “excess fees”] opens on Sept. 1 [that’s when you can pay]… but that’s for just the fall quarter right? you have to pay for winter and spring when it’s time comes right?

going alongside that
this is going to be a dumb question but here goes: $20k for UCSD fees = 1 year right…
i keep hoping that it’s for 4 years total, but it is one year right?

Yes, you pay for tuition for each quarter individually.
Not sure if the $20k you’re talking about includes summer session, housing, dining, etc. but last year tuition was ~$4k each for fall, winter and spring quarter (although just increased this week). Summer session is a bit more expensive- you pay per unit.

@spatel23 and clairafornia

I think he’s referring to the estimated total cost which is around $20k.

yeah that’s what i was thinking.
lol wish it was 20k for four years :stuck_out_tongue:
but thanks!

I have kind of a complex question for the OP:

I am currently attending a community college in Northern California, but am planning on moving to San Diego to finish out the classes that I have left before my transfer at a Community College in SD. Granted there are not too many I have left, just my biology and physics series, but my question is, while I’m there I was thinking about re-taking some of the classes the I got C’s in (like Ochem I) so I can bump up my GPA, but will UCSD admissions look upon that negatively or even acknowledge it, or does it sound like a solid plan?

Academic renewal is only possible if you received a D grade or lower, so that would be a waste of time. Also, something to consider is that due to the budget crisis the San Diego Community College District is VERY overcrowded. Classes like physics and biology are nearly impossible to get into… especially for a new incoming student. A new incoming student will have a registration time quite a bit after everyone else. I’m not trying to discourage you, but just letting you know in case that was something you hadn’t considered.

I read through most of this thread and it was really interesting to me. I am currently strongly considering UCSD, so it helped answer a lot of my questions and made a strong case.

This may be a silly question, but oh well. I will be majoring in Computer Engineering and I am going to buy a new laptop in May. I always wanted a Macbook Pro for college just to try something different, but will it be a good choice or does it not matter at all? Haha. Am I going to be working with any specific programs that perhaps PC’s are more equipped to do? I’ve owned PC’s my entire life, so I am comfortable with them. A Macbook would be fun though.

Hey Guys, I’m in a bit of a pickle, but will either smoothly transition or fight hard through AP Tests. Any advice/similar situational info?

I come from a hick town in northern Arizona where they did not require foreign language to graduate, so I never took any FLs! In my defense, I was born in Mexico and visiting family twice a year made me think I could use those 4 quarters to take every AP, Honors, Dual-Credit course in my school . . . instead of study Spanish. (I am not fluent–my reading comprehension is atrocious because we left when I was 5, but I can understand almost everything and reply back simply)

I Succeeded–but now I am afraid of the consequences of not having 2 years of an FL.

I chose to go the all out academic route because my Guidance counselor told me I could test out of all the Spanish. That is what I put on my application and I was accepted :slight_smile: Let’s say something happens and she lied/not-available anymore.

What options do I have? I’ve heard I could study hard and take a Placement Exam in Spanish at UCSD. Could anyone enlighten me into this situation?

Thanks, any insight is appreciated!

P.S. I’ll be contacting an official UCSD counselor later this week–this is my dream university–and won’t let it slip through my hands because I wanted to grab more “AP Cred”
