My D’s HS just sent us a long form letter about the upcoming PSAT early in the school year. My D is a rising junior. She took the PSAT last year. Because of various scheduling elements this year she is planning to take the SAT in the Fall. Is there any reason (other than more practice) to take the PSAT again? The form letter, of course, makes a big deal of the NMS aspect of the PSAT. I doubt very, very much, however, that my D is going to be a NMF.

Long answer: What other reason does your daughter need to take the PSAT? The mere fact that it’s practice for the SAT should be enough. Also, while she’s studying for the SAT, why not give a shot at becoming Commended/Semifinalist/Finalist (or whatever the levels are, I’m not sure)? A 225-ish (the highest for any state, I believe) cutoff isn’t too difficult to meet given enough (of correct) studying. That said, unless your high school is making you pay for the PSAT, which I highly doubt, go ahead and take it. Worst case scenario is that your daughter gets wonderful practice for the SAT BY ITS MAKERS as well as skip out on a few classes.
