My son is required to take Public Speaking (COM - 123) for his major. I figured it would be best to get it out of the way early on and may actually be useful to him in later classes. However he said his “advisor” told him that they strongly recommend students not take that class their freshman year.

Any reason for this, or is the advisor just being overly cautious? I know the lecture prof gets horrible reviews on ratemyprof but she’s the only one who teaches it so he’ll have to deal with her eventually.

I would email the advisor and ask why he/she strongly recommends that incoming frosh not take the class.

As it’s a 100-level class, I don’t see why he shouldn’t be able to take it. While there may be other courses he needs to take earlier than COM 123, if he satisfies the prerequisites (if any exist), he is eligible to take the course.

I’m wondering if it’s a self-confidence issue. Perhaps an incoming freshmen might not do as well as a more experienced college kid???

kind of going off what was said above it might be an issue of how much a student may know both books wise and street wise. some of the topics discussed may not be understandable to someone who has just entered college/ started being on their own.
