If you were one of the lucky few who got in, what was some of the coursework you completed and some of your extracurriculars that you think made all the difference? I know that they don’t admit many rising 9th graders into this program. I want to apply next year while in 8th grade, and should be in Algebra II Honors when applying and also in science research at school. I am on an ROV team at school and serve as the lead coder. Thinking of picking a cluster related to robotics and/or computer science. Definitely something engineering-related. What are my odds? 4.0 GPA and lots of math competition awards.
About 1% admitted in the last few years have been rising 9th graders. Consider how you would fit in spending a month with the majority of students who are rising 12th graders. You can only do COSMOS once. My two cents, I would encourage my own children to apply when they are a bit older and do some different things after 8th grade.
I understand what you mean, but I actually have a reason for why I’d like to do COSMOS the summer after 8th grade. I am going to be doing science research next year in 8th grade and also plan to do science research in high school. Doing COSMOS before 9th grade will give me a solid foundation in research skills (depending on which cluster I do of course) and also allow me to work on new engineering projects, which is what I already do on my ROV team. I plan to do other research programs after 9th grade, and I’ve done residential programs before. Just wanted to know if there is anyone here who also did it after 8th grade and what helped them get in.
