Any scholarship or grant applicable for Int' student

Hello, I am current international student @ umich2020 as transfer student. I am looking for scholarship or grant to cover my expenses in my current college. Especially, mandatory health insurance. Don’t get me wrong. I am working on campus and, occasionally, off-campus employment to cover my living expenses. But, the expenses are so high for my academic textbooks and supply stuff beside living expenses. Before I am really frustrated. Any advice in this situation.

Are you at U of Michigan NOW?

I hesitate to ask this… but how did you think these expenses were going to be covered when you made the decision to enroll at Michigan?

As an international student, the amount you can work is limited…as you know.

In addition, you can’t easily get loans here.

Can you rent your textbooks for a reduced cost?

Health insurance is a mandatory cost…I’m not sure you will find financial aid to help you with this.

If there is an international student office at UMich, go there and ask them what suggestions they have.

But really…these costs were there when you chose to enroll…right?

I recommend making an appointment with your financial aid office.

Mandatory means you HAVE to pay. I know that the schools have to explain this before you fly here.
If you are on a visa, you are not supposed to work off campus unless it is part of your training. CPT.
You were also required to show immigration, before being given your visa, that you had the dollars to pay your expenses. I know you were told how expensive everything is at a US university.

Go to financial aid, but I don’t know where they University would find unaccounted funds for a non-citizen, to pay for your required expenses.

My tuition is covered with aid, but small expenses are driving me nuts. :frowning:

Well, what I am trying to ask is small scholarship like one or two thousand dollar expense to pay for my living expenses. What grants or scholarship am I eligible to apply to as a int undergrad?

You need to talk to University of Michigan. Maybe the financial aid office there will have an answer for you.

If your tuition and fees are already covered, do you understand that University of Michigan is paying many many many thousands of dollars already to fund your college education? “All” you are skiing for is a couple thousand dollars more. “ALL”?

This is a public university in Michigan. Their first mission is to provide funds to the students who reside in their state…and whose parents pay the taxes that are already funding a LOT of your educational costs.

Is there anyone in your family who can help you with these expenses?

@romanigypsyeyes any suggestions for this student in terms of who they might contact.

Have you spoken to the international center?

There are emergency, no interest loans through the FA office. It’s only 500 and it is short term and must be paid back.

@thumper1

  1. I will my new semester from upcoming winter term.
  2. I used to cover my living expenses with part-time job on previous institute.
  3. I don't plan to be thrown on debt. No need to.
  4. Not sure about the reduced textbook rent price.
  5. I don't have fin aid, but I have grant to covers my tuition. I am just looking to pay for other financial resource.
  6. I am highly aware about the costs and I am working my best to meet these needs.

@romanigypsyeyes
Sounds good deal to me. To make it more clear, I am an international student, so I don’t think I am eligible for any Fin aid or loan. Of all 60 thousand dollars, 47 thousands are covered and living expense and health insurance and fees are combined worth around 12 dollar a year. I managed to find cheaper off campus housing, so I think I can handle it with no more savings for health insurance or textbook fees and stuffs.

Not sure where you’re living but moving to Ypsi can be a HUGE cost saver.

I still recommend reaching out to the international center. You’re not the first international student with this problem.

The $47,000 in GRANTS you are receiving ARE financial aid.

Do as @romanigypsyeyes suggests…on Tuesday go and talk to the international office. They are the best suited to help you.
