I’ve spot-checked a few schools and they all want the application turned in and fee paid ahead of the audition (which is understandable but expensive…). Anyone know of any schools that let you audition first, and then apply?

Even if they let you audition first, how would that help save money because they will not render a decision until you have filed an application and paid the application fee?

In any case, not all schools require an application filed in order to line up the audition but still have an application deadline (which may very well be before the actual audition date itself). I can think of a few instances, where the audition may be before filing an application but it doesn’t save money. For example, I have a student auditioning in Nov. for the BM in MT at NYU/Steinhardt and that is before the application will be filed or is due. But she won’t know if she got in until April and surely not until after her application is filed and the fee is paid.

The only other exception I can think of is that at Unifieds, you sometimes can do what is called a “walk in” without having applied but if you wish to be considered, you’ll have to then quickly send in your application as that will be needed in order to render an admissions decision. Also, I would never do a walk in audition for a school that is one that I truly would want to apply to. A walk in should be reserved for if there is extra time at Unifieds to be seen by schools that were not on the original list, as there is no guarantee they can fit you in.

I understand that application fees add up. A couple things to think about are:
- Apply to less schools and it will cost less. I have no idea how many are on your D’s list but my D applied to 8 schools total.
- In the scheme of what four years of college costs, the cost of the application fees are a teensy tiny percentage.
- If paying for the application fees is a hardship, there are forms that can be filed to waive the app fees.

Also, some colleges waive the app fee if it is filed online – may be worth checking to see if that is the case at any of your schools.

I know when my son applied at OCU the app fee was waived for a period of time, I don’t know if they still do this.

the only school i know of that has no application and audition fee is Point Park, if you apply online.

Otterbein has no application fee. OCU is now at 30 dollars.

if application fees bother you now, just wait until you get your first freshmen bill, ouch!

I second that emotion, PropMiss. When my D saw the first tuition bill, she asked, “Is that for ALL four years?”

Skwid, lol your post gave me a good laugh!
