I’ve been designated the administrator of a new SharePoint site (that I am in the process of creating) and I keep running up against the same issue time and again. If I want to create a visible web part (for the home page of the site) that is a list, what do I do? I have misstepped several times now. I am not electing to make it a part of the Quick Launch but I do want it to be visible on the page. How do I achieve that? Everytime I do this, my list only appears if you go to “View all site content” and look under the lists section. Can anyone help (in layman’s terms) as I’ll be doing this regularly? And where do I go to resequence the lists? I only see a place to resequence (“reorder” the entries within a given list.) Is there a good and simple tutorial or book out there?

I have been doing some simple web page design in SharePoint Designer (which is different from basic SharePoint) recently. I went out and bought two different books (Borders, Barnes & Noble both had some). What I did is looked up the problem I was trying to solve to see which ones were most usable. I use them all the time now, as there is pretty much nothing intuitive about SharePoint Designer
And no one at my company knew much about it at all, either. I am not sure you can use the webparts just in SharePoint, you may need to use the SharePoint Designer tool to do that.

However… my books are in the office, and I am at home until Monday, so I can’t help you by looking it up (or even giving you the book names). I have had some luck doing searches on the internet for tips, though.

Thanks, ip. I wasn’t aware of SharePoint Designer. I guess I’m using the version with training wheels. Would you please report back on Monday when you know the names of those books?

I just went looking for the receipts, and this was one of them. But like I said, it is for SharePoint Designer. You could check your local library, they might have books you could check out for a couple of weeks, too.

[Amazon.com: Microsoft® Office SharePoint® Designer 2007 Step by Step (9780735625334): Penelope Coventry: Books](http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft®-Office-SharePoint®-Designer-2007/dp/0735625336/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1264120533&sr=1-1)

SharePoint Designer might already be installed on your computer, too. It is a Microsoft product, so would be listed with the other Microsoft products in your programs listing. With SharePoint, you can build those basic all-look-the-same SharePoint sites that have team calendars, libraries of documents, etc. As soon as you want to make it look like a web page with more features, you have to move to SharePoint Designer.

It has taken me a LOT of trial and error to make any progress with it. One suggestion I have is to start your own “cheat sheet” of tips when you figure out how to do something, in plain English that you can refer to later.
