Parent of D24 looking for advises that you could offer on internships specifically chemistry and patent law for high school graduates. My D24 likes chemistry and Patent law or leaning towards MBA. Any advices would be greatly appreciated.
Looking for more experience where she can get exposure to see if she really likes what she likes etc…
Thanks in advance.
Just my take. I recognize and respect that everyone has different perspectives and priorities…
Isn’t she headed to college in the fall?
If yes, let her enjoy her summer and “just be a kid”. She’ll soon have a lot on her plate adjusting to college life.
Is there any particular reason she’s seeking opportunities this summer?
How can a HS kid assist in patent law? Kid is neither an engineer nor a lawyer. It’s like asking “how can my kid get an internship helping a neurosurgeon do brain surgery this summer”.
That’s why I suggested an actual job. Scooping ice cream. Camp counselor. Dog walker. Cashier at Target. Great experience for real life-- including a career as a lawyer or a chemist. Everyone needs to know how to hold down a paying job.
It’s nice she has interests in patent law this early. Does she have any idea what it is? Perhaps shadowing a patent attorney or IP specialist could enlighten. Otherwise, nothing else to do. By the way, patent law + chemistry career would likely need to have both PhD and JD. That wasn’t always the case, but clients are increasingly asking for PhD credential nowadays.
Or ABD (i.e. left before dissertation) in an engineering discipline and THEN the JD. I know a couple of successful IP lawyers-- their firms (and clients) don’t care that they didn’t stay for the dissertation, but they need to know that the actual science/tech knowledge is substantive and relevant.
