Any thoughts on the change in grading distributions of A-100?

Just for reference: I am an incoming DA freshman.

Fall 2007 with Tiller as Prof:

Section GPA: 2.6

A+, A, A-: 37 Students

B+, B, B-: 53 Students

C+, C, C-: 31 Students

F:6

W: 101

Now look at the Fall of 2010 with Winston teaching.

Section GPA: 3.086

A+, A, A-: 43 Students

B+, B, B-: 18 Students

C+, C, C-: 19 Students

F:1

W: 33 Students

One way I start to use to judge the harshness of the grading is by comparing the class grade average (section GPA) against the students’ average GPA. An easy class is one with higher section GPA. A fair one is with equivalent GPA’s. A difficult one is one with lower section GPA (section GPA deflation). There are many W’s which complicates the comparison. But, the ratios of the students getting grads >B- are about 75% for the two examples. If someone definitely wants a grade >=B, the percentage can be evaluated. We also have to be careful about small classes since the F grade may strongly affect the section GPA. I heard that Ms. Winston is a decent instructor. I think that her grading is fair to slightly harsh. Professor Tiller’s grading seems to be more stringent even w/o knowing the avg GPA.

A324, Cost Accounting, has a section GPA deflation around -0.4. We have to see if that is typical for the upper level business classes.

I think A100 doesn’t have to be the weed out class it used to be because of the change to requiring all B’s or above for automatic admission to Kelley. There are so many classes, in addition to A100, that an applicant can easily slip up on and get a B- or lower and be denied admission.

Ace, Kelley business majors are not allowed to take A324. It is for business minors only.

For A325 Cost Accounting, there is a huge difference in average gpa for each professor that typically teaches it. Campbell has graded much easier (and very easy for accounting) than the others in the past. His class is tons of work, however, and like an accounting boot camp.

Tiller teaches A311 Intermediate Accounting now. The first few semesters he taught it, he graded very generously, but last semester dropped down to the 2.8-2.9 range, which is about average for upper level accounting classes at IUB. I’m guessing he will stay in that range from here on out.

I’m currently in A100 with Winston and don’t find it too difficult. I don’t know if its her style of teaching or what, but I can’t really understand why there were so many drops and lower grades with Tiller. The actual exams haven’t really changed… I’m sure I’m missing something but I basically just studied a lot for the A100 midterm (doing like 12 practice midterms from years before) and did well on the midterm. The curve was an added 3-4% to match up with previous averages. I’m wondering if Tiller had a lot of practice exams for students to work on because I know that if I didn’t have those practice exams… I would’ve probably dropped the class. They help A LOT. Now I’m just studying for the final and have been doing a lot of practice final exams from previous sessions.

Where is this information available? My D is going to be a freshman this fall and this information would be very valuable in selecting which prof’s to choose/avoid.

Here are the grade distribution reports.
