Hello - my kid currently goes to TJHSST and has good scores and GPA. He’s considering applying to Cornell for computer science and I believe he has a reasonably good chance of getting in. However, I worry about the rigor of the program there based on what I’ve heard anecdotally. Last 4 years at TJ have been tough and I don’t want him burning out during college, if CS (A&S) at Cornell is just as or more demanding. Any kids here that are TJ grads that can share their experience and how it relates to HS? Many thanks.
Cornell courses are very, very rigorous. If you are looking for a less demanding, less competitive environment, I don’t think Cornell will be a good fit regardless of the HS rigor.
Not nearly current , not TJ, but FWIW I know several grads of Bronx HS of Science and Hunter College High School who did great at Cornell. Which is not to say they thought it was easy, necessarily.
I wouldn’t count on it being less demanding at other colleges with student bodies as or more capable than Cornell’s students either.
We know of one TJ alum currently at Cornell. From what I have heard, they are doing very well academically and has even had time to participate in non-academic stuff (think arts). Just one data point, of course.
None of the top 20 schools are gonna be lacking in rigor. I don’t think Cornell is more rigorous than its peers but it does have more STEM majors than most so that might be a factor.
Also just wanted to add that I went to two Ivies and from what I heard from the undergrads there I believe the other is more rigorous than Cornell.
