Uh, no way. It’s the kind of thing most decent public universities seem to have floating around their rumor mill, but I can’t imagine it actually happening.

I’ve actually heard that the president of Stony Brook University is planning to try and make Stony Brook University a private university…TRYING being the operative word there. Don’t know if it’ll go okay with the state and everything though…and I don’t think it’s a rumor because my friend said he read it somewhere…ah I don’t know T.T

Heh, a printed rumor is still a rumor! I read something about it too… in The Press. And as much as I love The Press and think they’re awesome, this particular column would not be my choice for accurate information.

When dear Shirley makes a public statement about it, I’ll start thinking it’s a possibility. But it’s not like we have a particularly large endowment to fall back on, and we’re hungry enough for money as is with all the construction and growth that’s been going on.

And honestly, I think going private (even if it were a realistic possibility, which I don’t think it is) would hurt the school. One of the really great things about Stony Brook is its diversity, both racial and socio-economic. My education has been richer for the presence of some really brilliant classmates whose families could never afford a private education and/or who are working their way through school. The atmosphere here is also much more down to earth than that at many of my high school friends’ private schools–many of the people I went to high school with are shocked that I don’t automatically assume everyone can afford to eat out all the time! I would hate to lose that for some perceived status gained by going private.

i am currently attending SBU and i’ve heard somethings like that too . . . if stony brook does become a private, that would be great. though it would mean higher tuition, i suppose it won’t be looked as a “not as good as privates” anymore :)
