My d is a freshman. My dh is thinking of getting her a portable scanner - so she can carry it with her to scan notes from classmates, or pages from textbooks, etc

I think it may not be permitted, as the library wouldn’t allow students to make xerox-copies from pages… and I think she’d just stay at the library and do the work that’s necessary, rather than scanning the pages and doing the work elsewhere…

Any students using portable scanners this way? Is it helpful?

In my personal opinion you don’t really need a portable scanner. You can spend your time at Firestone or the other libraries doing your research and it is a great study environment. Check the book out and take it to your room if you really need to if you can. If you can’t check the book out the library is comfortable and like I said before is fine to stay for a couple of hours working. Any outside sources she will be required to read for class often times will be scanned by profs and placed on blackboard so I really don’t think that it is really necessary.
