Any yield rate data released yet?

Am curious what the yield rate is this year for the Fall Class of 2016. Also surprising to see so many students admitted on appeal for Fall admit, rather than first bumping Spring admits to fall (unless maybe a large number of Spring admits already got bumped and there’s STILL room?). Anyone have any information?

I’m guessing that the yield was definitely lower due to the Common App, with one huge caveat: not for audition and portfolio based programs like Thornton, Roski and CSA. Those application supplements take huge amounts of thought, rehearsal, preparation, etc., often beginning years earlier. For undecideds and majors that don’t require much, if any, additional material, many students who didn’t necessarily have USC as a top choice probably figured “why not click one more box, pay one more fee and apply, as long as it’s this easy.”

But I doubt the Common App had as much affect on the numbers of aspiring filmmakers, artists and musicians, etc. applying to USC.

Just a hypothesis, though.

The university has in the past released these figures in August along with the freshman class academic profile.

Keep in mind there were over 36,000 students who received a letter of regret from USC, so it is no unusual to have a number of students appeal. The students who post on this forum are only a tiny percentage of those who have enrolled.

Yield figures are speculative at this time.

As for yield in the talent majors: I’ve never been able to find those numbers published anywhere! I was specifically looking for CSA, and struck out. Anyone know where to find them? When we visited last April I asked, and was given a verbal answer of about 1000 applicants to the production major in 2010, with an acceptance rate around 50. But I have never been able to find written confirmation. jazz/shredermom, Georgia Girl (Hapy birthday, by the wayn Georgia Girl!) or anyone else know if and where it is published?

The Gould School of Law may publish admission information. The only written numbers I have seen are from the School of Theatre. The number is out of date now, but here is the exact quote from the newly named USC School of Dramatic Arts.

“The school auditioned over 800 students nationwide for admission to the BFA program for the 2010-2011 school year. Of those, 31 invitations were extended to join the freshmen class.”

Most colleges appear to give admission information on their sites for an entire class, not individual schools.

We learned recently from Chris Sampson, head of Thornton’s Popular Music program, that the acceptance rate this year was about 8% for the major. I heard recently that SCA’s has traditionally been around that same number, perhaps even lower.

I don’t know about the acceptance rate for appeals this year, but Kirk Brennan tweeted me that they recieved about 1,000 appeals.

That is the largest number I have ever heard regarding appeals.

maddenmd, this year’s IMD majors were told that 1000 applied to IMD for class of 2015, 20 admitted, 17 matriculated. Overall, SCA quoted 4-6% admissions a few years ago. But they have not published specific numbers or broken them out by major, to my knowledge.

This is unofficial info about the animation major, but perhaps it’s useful. DS received a phone call from an animation professor at SCA in the last days of April. This professor (who was wonderful!) said it was their “toughest year ever.” She described how their faculty agonized over decisions. It was clear that for SCA (at least for animation) it was all about portfolios. She described an intensive process of review and talked knowledgeably about DS’s portfolio. She noted that they received “many hundreds” of applications for animation–a significant increase over past years. She was heartfelt in saying that they wished they could offer more financial support to the most promising animation applicants, but that only very limited funds were available to them. They accepted around 30 for approx 25 spots (if I remember correctly). I believe the acceptance rate was something like 6%, which matches what we were told at Explore.

Given the numbers, it looks like they expected roughly 83% yield for animation. I gather that animation is an up-and-coming SCA major (plenty competitive, but not yet as much so as film and IM).

Anyway, that’s what we were told. This professor was very warm, engaging and a delight to speak with (DS wasn’t home for the initial phone call and she shared this with me).
