What would be the ideal hotel location in Munich to be within walking distance to the best part of town- from a first time tourist POV (or at least to good public transportation)?

Any favorite hotels? We are willing to splurge with the exception of the Mandarin Oriental. We have to get two rooms and we just cannot justify the prices at that place.

Any MUST see attractions? It will be cold when we are there.

Neweurope tours sandemans. Take the free ones. Also if a history buff the 3rd Reich tour all walking tours. The tour to neuschwanstein was also very good.
No hotels recommendations. All clean and good, not great but we stayed inexpensively near D. Hauptbahnhof is main train station. Hofbruhhaus is a great beer hall and food. I came to like the radler ( look it up, for bicyclists half fruit half beer) and don’t forget the strudel ( to die for).

It’s been too long since I lived in Munich to give hotel reservations (and well, I lived there I didn’t stay in hotels), but if you are within walking distance of Marienplatz you’ll be fine.

We stayed at the LeMeridian across from the train station because we wanted to take day trips to Augsburg and to Salzburg. The hotel was amazing, but it was about 5 blocks the charming Old Town. If I recall there were some nice looking hotels down by the Hofbrohus. Go to google maps and then simply enter Munich hotels to view locations. The science museum in Munich is totally amazing…though I cannot think of the name at the moment. For a late fall/winter trip do yourself a favor and buy a smart wool long undershirt

Costco currently has some nice 1/4 zip base layer tops and bottoms with a small amount of wool that are reasonably priced, which you may want as some of your layers.

We recently stayed at the Maximilian apartments and hotel. A beautiful studio in the main building - nespresso, small fridge, stove, and microwave. Really nicely appointed.
Near the Marienplatz and lots of food/drink options.

The residenz museum (apartments and treasury) was fascinating. H went to the transport museum. We spent half a day at Dachau.
