<p>The mayor of Charleston, Joe Riley, gave a talk in my city the other night. Wow. What an amazing guy and what an amazing city. </p>
<p>His talk was on urban redevelopment and the importance of the public realm. The focus of his talk was that you redevelop a city for the residents - not for tourists or hoping suburbanites will move back in. You don’t build or do anything that isn’t beautiful. The public gets the BEST real estate - not developers. Everything is to a human scale and historically accurate for your city. His standards are extremely high whether the work is in a blighted area or smack downtown. It was just fascinating. Great pictures.</p>
<p>Wish we could accomplish just a fraction of what he’s gotten done. (Of course he’s had 8 consecutive terms and been mayor since 1975. Maybe if they ever tire of him he could move here!)</p>
