Anyone bought a fridge lately?

I’m working 15 hour days lately and I have to spend the weekend refrigerator shopping. Anyone bought one lately that you love? Any features other than crushed ice (my favorite) that I should look for?

What STYLE fridge are you looking for? Assuming NOT a built-in, I personally like the Sansung or LG fridges (preference towards Samsung) in a French door style that has 2 refer doors on top and a single freezer on the bottom. I would also look at counter depth models so they don’t protrude. They look like a built-in but at a fraction of the price.

Love my Samsung French door. It’s about a year old and it’s great.

I am following. My cheap 23 yo fridge will hopefully die soon. It is a basic no frills model. I think I have earned an icemaker.

I would be happy with a fridge without an ice maker!

Recently, when helping a relative to choose an appliance at Lowes, we heard that LG (and likely Samsung) was having big, big issues after its delivery co filed for bankruptcy.

Googled it. Whaaaat?! Hanjin is in BK?!!

I love my French Door with a frig drawer and drawer freezer, DH hates how slowly the icemaker propels the ice, something I could not test in the store.

The majority of fridge problems involve the ice maker, according to Consumer Reports. Many of these problems can be greatly reduced or eliminated altogether with some simple preventive maintenance and/or due diligence. Some examples: Occasionally dump the old ice in the bin and make new ice. If your ice looks “wet”, adjust your temperature so that your ice isn’t melting slightly and then sticking together when it refreezes. This will jam your output. If the freezer door gets left partially open by mistake and you notice wetter ice than normal, dump it and start over. Make sure the chute inside the door isn’t clogged with a layer of ice.

And who has had the joy of experiencing a water leak at the wall inlet valve or at the water filter?

I bought the GE monogram, counter size, with no external, ice maker.it has 2 freezer drawers, and ice tray is in bottom drawer, this may seem like a pain, but I had way too many problems with external ice maker.

I was limited to fridges that acted as built ins, because cabinets on both sides. I wanted doors that opened in European manner, so didn’t need inches on both sides. In the morning, I’ll check on others that fit the built-in look.

Ice makers are one of the biggest problems with refrigerators, everything from them jamming, producing slush instead of ice to things like water leaks from the water line. If you plan on getting one, do some research on how the warranty covers or doesn’t the ice maker, and also how easy it is to repair or clear if something gets jammed in it, some ice makers are located in very inaccessible places (friend of mine had a GE more than a few years ago, you couldn’t put the equipment ina more inaccessible place, must have been designed by the people at GM who created engines where you couldn’t get to the spark plugs or oil filter without taking half the engine apart…)

I have had this fridge for almost 3 years, and I love it: http://www.lg.com/us/refrigerators/lg-LSFXC2476S . You can get it regular or counter-depth (counter-depth fridges are a lot more expensive, and OF COURSE my kitchen is too small for a regular). If you don’t need counter-depth, there are several models of varying capacities. The door-in-door is really handy for our needs.

Another vote for the Samsung French Door model. We have had ours for a couple of years and it blows away the GE that it replaced.

I had to comment on this, the language in it is uninitentionally funny, given Samsung phones and at least one washing machine blowing up smile

The edit to my post did not work. What I was trying to say is that if you choose a Samsung or LG, you might not get your fridge for a while because they are scrambling for ways to bring their products in the US. We were warned by a sales person at Lowes that the delivery times were unpredictable.

We bought a 36" Maytag french door last year, 50% off on black Friday discount! Very happy with it so far.

I have heard good things about Samsung fridges as well, but they are bit too gadgety/gimmicky for us.

Assisted in helping an aunt replace a 30+ year old fridge which worked well until completely going dead a few weeks ago. She was constrained in her choices because of the small size of the alcove on account of cabinet and kitchen layout and she didn’t want to knock out the top cabinets over the alcove. She also didn’t need an icemaker.

The best of the few models available happened to be a GE. Working fine after a few weeks and hope it runs as well and long as the old 30+ year old fridge.

Good luck and hope you find what you’re looking for.

This summer we had to replace our less than 20 year old GE which had been fixed once and wasn’t worth the cost of the having a repair guy come. We were constrained with space between our cabinets and bought stainless steel front Whirlpool. No icemaker, never had one before and not needed. We did save our ice cube trays and egg container, not really a drawer as apparently those are no longer provided. So far, so good… has flexible shelving on the door so you can adjust shelves as needed, with one shelf specifically for a gallon of milk. I like the glass shelving on top of the fruit vegetable bins so that you can see what you have. Smaller freezer that what we have but we don’t freeze a lot or buy to keep food frozen to use in the future. If we make soup or sauce, we do always freeze. I keep some frozen vegetables and usually some sorbet/ice cream, frozen pie crust… but not much else.

The new refrigerator also came with a $75.00 energy saver rebate to submit to our power company which we have already done. We always use our local Long Island based store for appliances. Didn’t bother shopping around to check Lowe’s or Best Buy or Home Depot or even Sears. Seemed to be too much trouble to do so.

I suggest going on line and seeing what’s available. For me, Home Depot is a good place to do this. http://www.homedepot.com/b/Appliances-Refrigerators/N-5yc1vZc3pi

If the link doesn’t work, just go to homedepot.com and then search.

Consider these things. 1. How big is the space you have for the fridge. Measure and be very sure. 2. How big is the doorway to the room where the fridge is and every other door it has to be hauled through. (This may seem silly but sometimes people do house renovations with a fridge in place. ) 3. When comparing prices, find out whether delivery and take away of old fridge are both included. The price you want to compare is the bottom line. 4. Are you going to what to buy an extended warranty. These vary enormously in cost and sometimes the lowest price fridge store has the highest price extended warranty.

Be aware that new refrigerators will not last as long as the old ones. I got over 20 years from my last one. I’ll be lucky to get 10 from this one. Energy star appliances just don’t last as long.

We bought a new fridge in July and had it delivered in September after labor day so I can verify that the sale in July was a better deal than the one in September (it was). We have a 28.5 cu. ft GE french door fridge. We love it. It’s a no frills machine, just an ice maker and it’s in the new slate color. It’s finger print resistent and doesn’t scratch as easy as stainless.

Just got a new LG fridge about 4 weeks ago. It is so much quieter than the 9 year old Whirlpool it replaced. It has plenty of storage, even though it’s counter depth. http://www.lg.com/us/refrigerators/lg-LMXC23746S-french-4-door-refrigerator.

I got it at Home Depot. I ordered a dishwasher from Lowes around the same time and the Home Depot delivery system was much better than Lowes.
