Anyone else see Inception and hate it? Or is there something wrong with me?

^That’s the problem.

I’m being told that it’s an intellectual exercise; it makes you think, etc. I have standards for that. Like coherence.

On the other hand, when I go to see Fast and Furious, Transformers, and so forth, that’s not so important.

But I don’t see anyone claiming that this movie would be good at all if not for the supposedly genius plot. Or did I miss someone’s arguing that it was brilliant based on something else?

^ It was coherent. It does make you think. But not every single detail is included because there is a time constraint. IMO there was nothing in that movie that could have been edited out in order for other things to be elaborated on.

Whatever.

Let me be more concise:

1) I am not convinced it was coherent/internally consistent/sensible and will confirm upon a second viewing, which means either it is indeed not any of those things, or it is and therefore exemplary

2) It’s not that I need an explanation. It’s that things that defy the system in which the characters are functioning cannot be ignored completely, because that would indicate incompetence on the part of the director

I was completely confused. I only went to see Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Cillian Murphy. That made it worth my time.

I like science fiction movies, especially cerebral ones. I didn’t love Inception. I thought it was a flawed movie. Too long…poorly edited. The gun violence and explosions were over the top…and tiring. That said, I really like DiCaprio. The plot was layered and puzzling…but I don’t mind stories that make my brain hurt (Memento…one of his older movies did this too without all the crazy explosions and gunfire). I would not see it again. I know my son would love it…just the right mix of smart story and action for him. The action stuff is good for the box-office totals I guess. I like quieter movies…Solaris is more my taste.

This was one of the few features of this movie I didn’t like. I thought her performance was just bad.

Why don’t you tell us what you really think? LOL.

I liked it quite a lot.

I wonder if your appreciation of this movie might be affected by where you see it…we saw it in IMAX, and the imagery was fantastic. It might be quite different on a smaller screen.

One thing I particularly liked was that because it wasn’t based on a well-known book, comic book, or TV show, there was actually some suspense about what would happen.

May I also ask why in the world, during the snow dream level, the good guys were wearing the same outfits as the bad guys??? It would have been much cooler to see the bad guys in their suits skiing down those mountains!

Because the “projections” wanted to be sneaky about not standing out? Because all white looked cooler in the snow? Because nothing is logical in a dream? lol…no more.

The fortress was, in my opinion, the metaphor of the mind in psychotherapy. To get to the “truth” one puts up barriers. And what is the truth? The ones who are guarding the old man (old truth?) or the breakthrough?

Thanks for all these comments. You’ve confirmed for me that I’ll wait for this movie to appear on Netflix instead of spending $$$ to see it in the theater. (My husband read one review, in USA Today, and was psyched to see it ASAP. I read a different review, in the NY Times, and was not nearly as excited.)

*My husband and D were astonished that I had actually asked for the car keys in the middle of the movie, but after sitting through it, they did not exactly say I had made a mistake by leaving.

This happened today, so I had to laugh that this was posted. *

I hate movies that are inconsistent/illogical.

Thanks for saving me the time.
:)

I suspect that this movie will not seem nearly as good on your TV. If you like this kind of movie, go see it on a big screen–IMAX if you can.

I can understand somebody not liking it, but disliking it so much that you left in the middle? That seems very odd to me. I guess I just don’t do that–except for the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

Even after rewatching it, I am having trouble reconciling a few things, but I certainly wouldn’t call the movie illogical. In fact, I highly recommend it. (I can’t imagine anybody who went in with an open mind leaving before the end, so I find uskoolfish’s comments quite surprising.)

Inconsistent and apparently lots of dream sequences.

That’s all I need to know to not want to see it. (I know nothing else about this movie; actually never heard of it before.)

Dream sequences are the lazy artist’s bread and butter.

Lol…I grappled with leaving or not…it seemed like such a “statement” to actually get up and leave. And I did not see it like this at all. I just did not want to watch something that I found unenjoyable/ annoying for another hour plus! I had gone with my family as a last minute decision and did not know anything about the plot or reviews before sitting in the theatre.

I used to be the kind of person who would finish every book I ever started, as if I owed it to the author. (I think this came from my English major background.) The first time I chose not to finish a well-regarded book was empowering.

I guess I’ve just extended that freedom of choice to movies as well!

garland,

They aren’t your typical dream sequences, and I didn’t spot anything that is definitely inconsistent, simply as-of-yet unexplained. Given the complexity of the screenplay, the movie is one of the most tightly written that I have ever seen. I could definitely rationalize the criticisms of some, but I would without hesitation recommend that everyone see it (and not leave before the end).

All the vampire stuff leaves me cold. I’m looking forward to the October release of
Secretariat: The True Impossible Story.

I’m going to start another thread with a spoiler warning to discuss the movie.
