This whole Momo challenge and all these other dumb challenges that keep popping up?
That and the weather.
Yep. Like the Tide Pod challenge, I feel it’s way too overblown. None of the teenagers I know have done any of this stuff (so far as I know).
That said, I always have warned my kids…the internet is not 100% safe and it’s not private. Be careful what you post on there and if some idiot in a youtube video is doing stupid things, don’t copy them. Luckily, my kids have good heads on their shoulders…
Never heard of the Momo challenge.
Whatever you do, DON’T Google it.
Honestly it feels like boomers and gen Xers will seize any opportunity to paint young people in a negative light. Actual facts be damned.
Ironic that we’re called naive and ignorant when it’s overwhelmingly older people that share this crap. (And yes there are studies proving this)
Momo challenge is being reported as a hoax. I had never heard of it prior to this thread. I think social media spreads good AND bad quickly.
@romanigypsyeyes Late boomer here. I am always apologizing to my sons for my demographic.
@romanigypsyeyes the Momo challenge may be a hoax but young people do plenty of stupid things on social media that open them up to criticism…number one of which in my opinion is don’t document your entire life online.
@natty1988 and to answer your question…yes!
Online is a fact of life for young people. They, the digital natives and the generation after them, will be the ones who need to determine the rules and parameters of online life. Us older folks have too much neophobia combined with “kids today!” thinking to be the ones to do this.
Young people doing dumb challenges is nothing new. It’s cyclical. It was huge in the 1950’s. Phone booth stuffing, goldfish swallowing etc… Yes there are differences today because of the online world but they will have to be the ones to decide how much should go online.
Agree that every generation has it’s things to be “stupid” about. And every generation should really despise the fact that people label them “stupid” for the few that indulge in the wrongdoing.
Also, ALL people, all ages (not just young people) do stupid things on social media. Let’s not throw online faux pas into one age group.
I’m with the guy who calls this “classic moral panic”. Anyone who knew about the panic over comic books in the1940,s understands just how silly parents freaking out over stuff can be.
I am sick of all of the “challenges”. I just saw on FB that there is a new “cheese challenge” which involves parents throwing a slice of cheese at their baby’s face to see their “funny” reactions. Things like this really reinforce my urge to limit my time online.
@buckscountymom me too! Why would anyone do that cheese challenge? Seems pointless to me!
Some of these challenges are a bit overblown…I remember they had a SNL skit making fun of older people getting all up in arms about these challenges that all teenagers are supposedly taking part in…
Whether or not itis a hoax, the MC is in no way like “all the other dumb challenges that keep popping up.”
Sigh. Teens playing lemmings. Mall goers get their nerves rattled.
Apparently, this dim bulb “celebrity” had enough power over 500 teens who got their brains temporarily turned off during that flash mob-like gathering.
