Anyone else taking a year off?

… or have taken a year off?

I was admitted to UM for 2009-2019 but I’m deffering a year to take care of my dad. It was already approved but the thing is I don’t know what to do for that one year. Sure I have a job already and I take care of my dad but since I wont be going to school I’ll have a lot of time on my hands especially on the days my dad goes to dialysis. I want to make this year useful and productive.
Any ideas?
Traveling is out of the question for obvious reasons so I’m stuck here in Hawaii. And there aren’t many engineering firms here for me to intern at and interships are kind of hard to find anyways o.o
Ohh and if you did take a gap year could you share your experiences? And if it was hard to adjust to going back to school after a year

Start studying what you’ll take when you come. You can probably find PDFs of whatever books they use, start reading and doing problems and such.

You’re from Hawaii…I’m from Hawaii too. I’m hoping that I could mean a few people from our state. I have a friend who did take a year or two off and he said that it was harder because he forgot everything he learned in high school that was supposed to prepare him for some college courses, like calculus. I suggest the same as Qwerty so you can be ready for next year’s classes. Good luck!

You could take classes at a local community college, that way you can knock off the first year requirements and come to Michigan as a sophomore.

Get a job.

Hey there,

I did end up taking a year off this past year, and will most likely be attending this fall. I had a great time, it was definitely the best choice for me. I ended up travelling and working, and I’m not sure whether the transition will be difficult. Good luck!
