Glad to hear that, gloworm. I didn’t think that was the case when Teri mentioned that the local news was on.

Glad to hear that, gloworm. I didn’t think that was the case when Teri mentioned that the local news was on.

Oh, I was very happy that the local news was on because I knew they’d be showing celebrations all over town, along with breaking back and forth to Philly as they interviewed players/staff (now they’re interviewing Rocky Wirtz).

We live in a quiet suburb of Chicago and there were fireworks going off and cars honking and kids yelling so it was kind of fun. And I’m not even a sports person - still quite exciting for the city. It was amusing to see the crowds gather at Wrigley - at least they get to cheer for something! I was in the city a couple of weeks ago for a business meeting and got to see the helmets on the lions at the Art Institute, Buckingham fountain ran red, and the tops of buildings all had red lights going. Right now we’re trying to picture where they’ll put the stage for the rally Friday morning - Michigan and Wacker? Well, if Oprah could close down the street why not the Hawks!

The last time the Hawks won was 1961. The next year I think the leafs beat them. Any chance of history repeating itself?

grats Hawks… hope my Caps can make the necessary changes to contend next year.

On our local news tonight, they interviewed Bobby Hull and he was talking about that, saying that he reminded all the ‘youngsters’ on the team to cherish every moment of this win because it may be the only Stanley Cup they ever win.

In the same breath, though, there’s lots of talk about how young the team is and what an advantage it is for them.

One of the interesting things that the newscasters and those being interviewed seem to skirt around is how Rocky Wirtz has turned this organization around. But you can’t hardly talk about that without thinking in comparison what a horrible job his father did with the team. I don’t know how much of that Bill Wirtz ever cared about (obviously not much because he never changed his style), but here Rocky is, not even three years after his father’s death, and look what he’s done. This just kind of cements the speculation of how stubborn and cheap he was, and what it cost the fans of Chicago all these years. And Rocky wasn’t even the son who was involved in the day-to-day operations like his brother was, but he’s done an excellent job of turning things around in a very short time.

Kids are in Europe, so were sleeping, but we have a skype scheduled on their lunch break.
In e-mails they both made sure to ask for T-shirts.

Kane the Buffalo boy with the Cup-winning goal!!! Can’t wait to have him bring it home, it will be in Buffalo for a day at least.

Congrats to the Hawks!!! Glad that Soupy got his cup too (one of my favorite ex-Sabres)

We know how the Philly fans feel about the other team winning the cup in your house (obviously, ours was a eeny-weeny bit more controversial). The booing was uncalled for though, I would still be cheering the heck out of my team if they played like the Flyers, getting to the finals after just making the playoffs on the last day of the season.

Zero chance. With the Hawks win, the Leafs now have the longest drought since winning the Cup. Forty-three years is a long time but there’s no way that it will end in forty-four.

Not even a .00000001% chance? LOL.

I became a Leafs’ fan after their first of three Cup victories in 1962. I was a high schooler when they last won in 67. My dad died not long ago waiting for another Cup…

I am now on CPP. Really curious if I will see them win a Cup in my lifetime.

What a sad, sad commentary on this once proud outfit.

Canuckguy,

Sorry for what you are going through. I remember as a kid listening to the Hawks on radio w/Lou and Lloyd. We had no TV. Then came the Bill Wirtz idiocy several years later. It seemed he did everything he could to turn fans/players against him.

Look at the Hawks now. It could happen for Toronto, too.

Went to bed early last night, but recorded the game “just in case”–I enjoy watching the jubilant players hoisting the Stanley Cup. (It always seems a shame though when the team wins the series at the away rink.) Of course my S stayed up to the bitter end and was struck by how Kane was the only one, initially, celebrating the winning OT goal.

Anyone see Roenick on ESPN this a.m.? He actually got teary-eyed talking about the excitement of winning the Stanley Cup. (Apparently he never had the honor.)

Roenick cried last night on live TV. He was one of the wonderful Hawks driven out by Bill Wirtz. He left the team on very bad terms.

Gloworm,
This is an excellent and intelligent post. Please keep up the excellent work.

ThinkSnow - Are you being sarcastic… just asking, because everything gloworm says is true.

I’ll take an Oilers win first, but we can still hope for the Leafs :)

Sorry for any Maple leafs fans. Watched the Hawks my whole life with no Stanley cup and my kids say, “So did we!”

You’ll win. I’m sure some day you will win.

Hawks fans were so loyal for so long that the dad didn’t have to do anything. I remember being a season tix holder up in the nose bleed seats in the old stadium with the local pipe fitters union. My husband and I were so broke it was our only splurge…that and a couple of beers a game. Sooooo fun.

Then, when I got pregnant and had kids, I couldn’t see the home games anymore cuz Wirtz thought it was bad to televise the home games. Rocky has been much, much better, though I’m pretty sad Dale Talon wasn’t able to be a part of the organization when the team actually won.

I’m really, really glad we won. The team was at the Pony with the cup after they got home at 2am. I hope by now they have gone home. ;)

terriwt,

To undertand TS, check the thread about “Word” Cup v NFL. He/she didn’t like my comment, true as it is.

See you at the Blackhawks homecoming parade tomorrow!

cottonwood - As much as I’d love to be there (for the least reason, to show D2 what a ticker tape parade is), it’s also Blues Fest weekend, as well as the cross-town classic. It’s going to be a madhouse and I just don’t know if I’m up for it. If I could talk D into going with me, I might. H is out of the country and won’t be back until tomorrow night.
