Anyone familiar with the area around Emory in Atlanta?

My niece will begin a PhD program in August and I’d like to get her a gift certificate to a local eatery. It seems likely it may not be wherever the freshmen are hanging out but I’ve never been to the campus and don’t know where to start. I did go to the Emory CC forum but didn’t have success there. Suggestions, anyone?

I’m in Atlanta and familiar with the area. Do you know where she will be living? Will she have a car? As a PhD student, I expect she will have different preferences than an undergrad. :slight_smile:

While I know she will have a car, I do not know where she will live. I do agree she is likely to not hang out where undergrads do. I really just want to celebrate her and thought the easiest/most logical way was to give her a gift certificate to a local favorite deli/coffee shop/specialty market or something like that. Any suggestions without knowing where she’ll live? She will be new to Emory/Atlanta.

General Muir near CDC, Wagaya at Emory Village, Zyka come to mind close to Emory. Murphys, Gigi’s, The Deer & the Dove, Whoopsies, Little Bear are a little out. Check out Michelin Guide ATL.

@jym626 can you help?

Thanks @RussianMom–I’ll check out your suggestions. And kind of you, @Knowsstuff, to tag Jym–I forgot she’s from Atlanta!

The deer and the dove and little bear are great choices. More upscale. Lots of good choices in and around Decatur. There are also some good options in Inman Park and Ponce City Market.

Perfect – thank you so much. I have more than enough suggestions and appreciate them. We can consider this topic closed now. Again, thank you!

Apologies I took so long to get back to this, but I see you have many dining suggestions and some of the ones I was planning to mention.

The other thing I’ll throw out there as an alternate idea is a membership to Fernbank (natural history and science museum), High Museum (art), or the Botanical Gardens. These are all relatively close to Emory and have regular evening “adult-only” events in addition to the basic membership access. If your niece is interested in any of those areas, that’s a gift that keeps on giving for a full year for less than the price of a nice meal for two.

Congrats to your niece. I hope she enjoys her time at Emory.

No problem. We are one big family :family_man_man_boy:.

I remember when our son saw GT we went to Emory since people told us to. Lol. Both schools were very impressive.

But we went to a fantastic, low brow, local, BBQ place around GT. It was fantastic!! Can’t remember the name but it was awesome.

Good luck to your niece.

Our friends who lived in Shanghai for a number of years took us to Jia at Ponce Coty Market. It was wonderful!
