Anyone familiar with the Raleigh Durham area?

My D needs to fly in to meet with a company for two days and I’m trying to find a way to have her go solo. So far we can’t find a company that will rent a car to a 19 year old…have emailed we car at Duke (web page states they only rent to those affiliated with Duke–my d attends elsewhere) but the national companies all appear to be a no go. A high school friend attending duke has offered to house her and it makes no sense for me to travel with her just to drive her around. Would love to chat with someone familiar with getting around the area.

I understand your plight. My D goes to UNC and transportation is an issue in the area. Even transportation from the airport is limited to two shuttle services. I don’t understand why the transportation is so poor in an area that has two major schools and not all the kids have cars. There are local buses but it seems that they are not as frequent or necessarily go where you need to go. Zipcar is available to students but not sure if they would rent to a non-student in the area. You can check that if you have not done so already.

I would recommend contacting the company she is visiting and asking if they can recommend a car service and go that route. Often companies that have visitors have a reliable transportation service and can sometimes even make arrangements.

Best of luck. I know this is not as easy as it should be.

Duke mom here. Try Charlene’s Safe Ride [RDU Airport Shuttle - Shared & Private](http://www.charlenesaferide.com/) - endorsed by the university and used constantly by the students. Very reasonable compared to car services and taxis in other cities.

The shuttle from the airport is about $25, and Charlene’s is $30 for students, so no need to take the shuttle. The driver will give your daughter a business card and she can call whenever she needs a ride. Ride is free if the driver is not on time.

Please feel free to PM me if you need more info.

Thank you for the responses and I will give Charlene a call. Since I posted, I did hear back from we car and it sounds like my D can apply and is likely to be accepted (about $66/day). In the meantime, I called a taxi company I found via google that agreed to a flat rate of $32 (rather than his projected $40-45 per the meter) each way. Thus, at least I’ve discoverd some options…will see what Charlene has to say…like the idea of the company being endorsed by Duke rather than the random taxi company but, still, I’m happy to have found options!
