anyone good with names?

Where does the name Ilijevski come from?

I got a pen pal with the name.

Somewhere in eastern Europe… Poland, Russia, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine. One of those, probably. Could also be Croatia, Bosnia, or Serbia.

edit: Just did a quick search. There’s a guy Ilija Ilijevski from Macedonia.

I knew it was something like Russian! All the eastern names sound so similar though…

yes…it gotta be eastern european. I’d go w/ slovenia…almost natural instinct…no other explanation…:D…although it cud also be northern europe too…like denmark, switzerland, etc.

Kind of… they have the same suffix anyway. Names ending with ko or ski will always be eastern european, and names ending in ic will usually be from a slavic country.

Really? I don’t know any name ending with ski originating in Scandinavia or Switzerland…

It’s probably from Russia, Ukraine, or Poland.

Names endind in -ic are Croatian, Serbian, or Bosnian.

Names endind in -ic are Croatian, Serbian, or Bosnian.

Usually, but not always. And those are all slavic countries.

I know, but I’m Croatian, and I haven’t met anyone from another country with an -ic last name. And yes, I know they’re slavic countries.

Grigore Vasiliu Birlic - Romanian actor

I’m Romanian. I’ve met people with -ic from other eastern European countries. You have to realize that these last names existed prior to the current national borders of croatia/serbia/bosnia or the former yugoslavia.

Yeah, I guess you’re right. That’s kind of interesting. I always thought of -ic names as being strictly Croatian/Serbian/Bosnian.

According to Wikipedia, last names ending with “-ski” are from: Poland, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Macedonia

And last names ending on “-ic” (-ich): ex-Yugoslavia (Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia), Belarus, Poland, Slovakia. Yugoslav ex.: Petrović, means Petar’s son
