Just found out our almost 3 year old dog has to have the plate and screw on her front leg removed. Apparently one of the screws in coming loose (always knew this dog had a loose screw somewhere) and causing pain. She chewed on it and caused an opening along the original incision. Our regular vet did x-rays and said they thought the plate had shifted. Today we took her to the specialist that did the surgery 11 mos ago and he said the plate needed to come off. He said the leg had healed and she should be fine after removal and healing. Anyone have any experience with this? (All I can say is thank heaven for pet insurance - and did she have to do this just when we may be furloughed - sigh).
My dog had a plate and pin put in his hind leg about 8 years ago after being hit by a car. A couple of years later, the pin was shifting and causing him pain. He had it removed, but the plate is still there. He has had no problems at all after the pin was removed.
